...and of course it's awful. I'm curious to see how far they can take this car, but I don't have high hopes for it given what's wrong with it. I genuinely don't understand how or why people will dump thousands of dollars into an engine to make power when there are serious, fatal flaws in the car...
I know it's 2023 and these questions are still being asked, but looking around on the forum, the question of Evo 1 & 2 still hasn't been concretely answered.I have what I'm fairly certain is an Evo 1 or 2 exhaust manifold, which both share part number MD187529. The manifold has "529" cast onto...
The MD726235 input shaft bearing (Koyo 26118YR1 & 26283N) appears to be gone worldwide, and I can’t find any alternatives to it. Does anyone have any lifesaving tips, or is this just another dagger into the DSM?
Tim @twicks69 has talked a couple of times over the years about a very early Evo I gearbox, which had the Galant & 1990 DSM-style 3rd & 4th gear pieces instead of the 93-99 DSM style that regular Evo Is come with. ASA/CAPS told me that no Evos ever got the early style 3rd & 4th gears, so I...
I just unpacked a CBR head and found these flaws in the deck. I’m not sure how this damage could have happened (likely on the bench?), but I’m not sure the best way to deal with it. The head will obviously need a mill to correct the deck, but would you do anything to smooth or fill the nicks?
Congratulations to the crew at Boostin Performance for breaking down the 6.99 barrier in the new Red Demon, the first AWD 4-cylinder car to do so. Amazing persistence, determination and talent from the team to make it happen! Well done!
Does anyone have any experience in regards to running an intake inlet pipe that is smaller than the turbo inlet? I know it's an unusual question because it's so easy to just use a bigger intake pipe. However, I'm after an airbox solution that takes air from the Evo 123 hood, as well as behind...
Selling the following:Set of Ohlins DFVs for Evo 789. I bought them to adapt to my Evo 1, but I'm going to find a simpler solution which doesn't require adapters. They are used and quite clean, but one of the struts does show indication of sweating/leaking (pictured). The springs are 9k/7k...
Possibly a rookie question, but stick with me.I'm converting to the Kiggly crank trigger in my early 7-bolt car (Evo 1) and need to pick a CAS. The housing and sensor of the CAS is the same between DSM & Evo, but the bolt into the cam and the trigger cylinder are different. I don't think my...
I've had a lot of downtime since COVID-19 hit and noticed that my plan calls for a huge electrical load on the system. I've found approximations of amperage draws for the following:-MR2 electric power steering pump: 30-40 amps typical load, up to 70-90 amps max load.
-Tilton transmission...
Do Evo 4-9 coils fit into the DSM valve cover? I'm interested in stuff like the Okada Projects coils which are a decent upgrade to the stock Evo stuff and fit under the stock spark plug cover. Hypothetically, this would remove the bulky DSM spark plug wires & coil assembly, and be an improvement...
The JUN 272 used to be the hottest cam over 10 years ago, but times have obviously changed. I'm asking to see if Jun's cams are still relevant in the 4G63 world. There are publications out there showing that they are machined to impeccable tolerances, but according to the DSPORT cam test, the...
Mods - apologies if this isn't allowed. Please let me know and I'll take it down.As many of you know, OEM gearsets for the DSM & Evo 123 transmission are disappearing, or in many cases gone. Right now, if you want an OEM Evo123 1st/2nd & input shaft for your car, you have to take chances on...
I have a set of Wiseco pistons that are bare and don't have the typical coating that Wisecos have (like the picture). What are your opinions on these? Is it worth having the skirts (and crowns) coated for longevity?
Maybe someone has some they're willing to part with. Brand new would be ideal, but I would take used or shredded gears, as long as the engagement teeth are fine.
Does anyone have a solution to the big synchro 3/4 hub & slider longevity issue?
I know on Evo III gears, the hub and slider have more meat, and will take more abuse - at the cost of the gear's strength. The Evo 1 has, I believe, slightly stronger gears, but are still prone to stripping. If...
Buying parts for my engine now, I decided to stay low-buck instead of going exotic since my goals aren't too outrageous. It's Evo-1 spec (7-bolt) staying stock-bore 2.0L, max of 550WHP with EFR 7670, will see 94 pump. Might see 9000-9500 RPM on an autocross track. I already have the pistons in...
I've been reading about experiences with lightened engine components and can't seem to picture the experience of using the car off the track. In my Evo 1, I'm heavily considering a Butcher crank (either 88mm or Eagle 94mm), with aluminum rods, and a set of light Wisecos that I already have. I...
I got bored and started thinking about how bad our center diff sucks and needs to get away from viscous and clutch-type setups. Yes, that leaves either an open diff (no), welded diff (hell no), and the equally sucktastic Quaife center. The issue with the Quaife, of course, is that it breaks the...
D-Sport magazine just conducted an interesting test: http://dsportmag.com/the-tech/twin-scroll-vs-single-scroll-turbo-test-the-great-divide/Same manifold, the only change was the turbine housing. It says they kept the same A/R which would obviously give the TS setup the advantage down low, but...
I've noticed myself posting this a couple of times, so I'll just make one big thread about it. This is a list I've compiled of camshaft offerings for the DSM 4G63 engine. This information is correct to the best of my knowledge, but please feel free to add or correct any information you may have...
Has anyone used Manley's "H Tuff" rods yet? They're supposedly a bridge between their basic H-beam and the Turbo Tuff I-beam.http://shop.boostinperformance.com/product-p/manley-htuff-dsmevo-rod.htmAre they worth the extra $55 over the regular H-beams? I would think they're heavier, but I...
I know there are already dozens of threads on transmission longevity, but I still haven't arrived at an answer. This is the center of my build:
S200SX-56 with 1.22 housing
T4 twin scroll
Tomei 260* cams, Manley valve springs & titanium retainers
OS-Giken unsprung twin disk
No E85, so 94...
I'm making a separate thread to ask this since the manifold thread I started months ago won't get much attention.I have this 4G63 manifold that I'm very attached to and want to use it on my car. The problem, however, is that the wastegate flange is in such a spot that the wastegate would...
Quick silly question. How would a Holset HX35 54mm 7-blade compressor paired with an HX40 12-blade turbine in 17cm divided T4 housing (with functional twin scroll) work together?
1). Any boost, vac, or exhaust leaks?
Yes - tiny TB leak, takes a few minutes to drop below 15 psi2). Verified mechanical timing?
Yes3). Verified base timing?
Yes4). Ignition system
COP or Stock Coil: Stock coil
Wire brand and Age: Some JDM aftermarket, look good
Spark Plug brand, type and...
I noticed I had no build thread here, time to change that.As some of you know, the Evo 1-3 is very similar to a 2g DSM. Same 7-bolt (minor differences), similar electronics, W5M33 transmission (way better gear ratios though!)...most of the stuff that fits a DSM will fit an Evo. This makes...
I just did a little reading into the Tomei 260* Poncams I have for my Evo 1. They're looked over almost entirely and the price is very reasonable, so I bought them just to have a nice mild cam. I'm slightly confused though...for a 260* cam, these things seem big - bigger than most 264s. The...
I just bought the OnGreen manifold on a whim, looking for any experiences with them. I'm aware I can put an EFR7064 on it and be done with it (I am looking for spool/powerband vs. peak numbers), but I'm frugal in this regard. Dynos welcome!
My car is an autocrosser, basically a stock 2g motor with Tomei 260 cams (10.7/10.2 lift), Manley single valve springs and titanium retainers, ARP head studs, Cometic HG, all the power bolt ons. Since my gearing is short, I need as much speed out of 2nd gear as possible, and RPM is the only way...
I've got a "high performance" Fel Pro 1153 composite (not 1153-1 MLS) head gasket in my hands, and realize by the part number that it's not the 9627PT composite Permatorque that's held in high regard here. How does it compare? Good enough for 26 psi on a HTA68?
Hypothetical here, possible n00b question.
I'm looking for a cheaper twin scroll setup for best response that fits the DSM/EarlyEvo - tubular TS manifolds are a bit out of my range. I have a feeling this setup might work, can anyone comment?FP Evo VIII/IX cast manifold, add an adapter to...
