My second dsm was out of phase as well with the same symptoms. Just the rear can be out of "phase". Should be re timed asap as it is also the oil pump and the vibration will lead to wear.

So the new heater core hoses don't align with the firewall alignment/seal piece. Has anyone had this problem with new heater cores? I don't want to bend them because they aren't even close. Should I just return it and hope another works?

I honestly don't know the part numbers, most sites list just them fic dsm/evo injector seals. It depends if they have the flared end. I did some digging and pte machined and installed a pintle cap while fic just used a different set of seals but pte also had the un-machined style or sport...

If you don't have boost or vacuum leaks I'd check base timing and fuel pressure

They had new technology for the time. You gotta remember the dsm's were made in the early mid 90's.
