You don't have to be that slow just make sure you are steady turning it and if you need something to put in the hole to hold it down a little drill bit works great. I just did mine about a month ago.

you might wanna check the spark plug wire numbers they might be in the wrong firing order and that might eliminate the studdering at least. The turbo might be out because the exhaust leak is either the turbo being bad but you wouldn't be seeing smoke if the turbos out from that so the head...
