For the timing, take of timing covers and spark plugs and turn engine by hand to make sure the timing lines up, paying close attention to the marks on the camshafts and lower timing marks. If you feel any binding don't turn it anymore cause you could cause more damage.
The first thing I would do is clean everything off so when you do start the engine you will know exactly where it's comming from. I use either engine gunk or easy off Oven Cleaner let it sit then rinse off and get everything as clean as to can.
I have a 1998 gst spyder just bought a used chra td05hr 16g6 turbo I also bought a rebuild kit for it and replaced all the internals only problem I am having is that when I put on the compressor wheel back on and tighten to spec its hard to turn the turbo wheel because one way it gets tighter...
