While replacing a brake hose, I was able to unthread the flare nut, but the nut stayed glued to the brake line. I was able to pull the clip and unwind it by turning the entire hose. How do I free the flare nut from the brake line? I tried gripping the brake line with pliers as tight as I...
On the subject of cars lasting a long time....Schneider turns 92 in December. Parts are still available, but some aren't. The frame, the engine block, the radiator shell, headlight buckets, wheels, and the bodies are no longer made. Lots of extra blocks around. You can get reproduction...
I concur. I had a belt skip a tooth several times. Each time when you gave it some throttle it would be weak, feel a little stumbly, have minimal boost, no top end. Not sure which cam skipped (long time ago), but there was no smoke.
I'm about to do this myself. The machinist I used for the head recommended a gentle razor blade followed by a carbide scraper. That's the plan. No abrasives.
Depends on how loud you want the music to be.
Depends on how much distortion you are willing to live with.
Depends on how efficient the speakers are, that varies quite a bit.
Depends on if you're keeping existing speakers that might not be rated for much more power. So it depends. I've noticed...
I can see where what you're looking for would definitely cost more. I've never seen flatwork guys use a full width screed board in a 2 car or larger garage. . That whole idea sounds pretty unwieldy. When I wanted to have more precise grade control, they would shoot grades with a laser and...
If I remember correctly, the front face plate on the compressor does not rotate when the clutch is off. So to verify the clutch works above the "Clack" when not rotating, when the drive belt is rotating (could be cranking, not running) when energized the front faceplate should rotate. With the...
Before and after:I wet sanded with 1000, then 1500, then 3000, then wet compound with a foam pad on a drill. Maybe if in bright sunlight I see swirl marks I might need to wet polish with some glaze compound, but it looks pretty good now. Thanks for the idea, it saved me from buying a...
If this had been a real emergency, you would have been instructed on how to lower your heart rate from the accidental grounding of the exposed hot wire, and told where the beer was.I'll also addWith the engine not running you should hear the clutch clack on.
With the engine running, with...
Also interested to see this, might prove helpful in the future. Not sure what manifold I'm going to end up with yet, but the PS is completely apart now and can be modified if needed.
I agree on how to treat components - blast, prime, paint, powder coat even better. Luckily I found a good local blaster that also powder coats. SHWEET!Fasteners - I've been using a lot of stainless. Not OEM, but way better corrosion resistance, and probably cheaper too. If you want bright...
Interesting description. Guess you have to drive one to feel that. Didn't realize the 1st gen had no roof.I recently "tried on" a '56 T-bird. Couldn't get in without major contortions, and could never drive it, let alone be comfortable. It's incredibly small, and there is no seat...
Greetings from another 1G restoration going on.I used to fly daily into San Juan, was based in St Thomas. Been to Vieques, Culebra, Fajardo. One of the lessons I learned in St Thomas was car theft is rampant. I had a $3,000 used Mazda stolen right off the yard. I was told later it's...
Looking over the roller rockers for wear, they seem uniformly in ok shape. The roller itself can slide slightly along its axle, and you can see bits of the inner needle bearing. The roller surface is shiny, smooth, and free of defects. Then I noticed a number - 48. Each one had a number...
So it appears I have 2 different types of lash adjusters. (Even though all 16 were replaced with new) One I have 4 of, they are shorter with larger holes in the tip, and seem to have a press fit cap. The longer ones have the smaller tip hole, and have a crimp looking cap.Are both of these...
You'll need to assess how much hose of each size you'll need. Here's a link to the 10 foot section of 3mm I used:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tbs-ts-hv0303-bk
There are other colors, sizes, and lengths. You'll likely need 3mm, 4mm, 6mm, and a little bit of 10mm. I think. I don't have...
I would be just as concerned with prep. If you have it off the car, take it to be blasted in the area of the rust. More than likely it has crept unseen under the existing chipped edge, you'll want to blast/peel the coating back to where only clean metal shows. Far better adhesion that way...
I just did this for my 1G. I ordered vacuum hose in both 3mm and 4mm from Summit Racing, 10 foot lengths. Spring clamps from McMaster Carr. I got the water hoses in a kit on Ebay - . $50 for silicone hoses. The radiator hoses look good, and the short elbows should work fine. The heater...
I'll be re-assembling the cams shortly onto the rebuilt head, and I am wondering what I should look for on the lifters and rockers. The lifters were replaced 20,000 miles ago, I have no record of the rockers being replaced. (155k on the car). Last I remember the engine was running quiet...
If the system has been at zero pressure for a while, or has a bad shaft seal, you might have enough moisture in the system to cause problems. Then you need to bring it down to zero pressure with a vacuum pump and boil out the water.Just be aware there are lots of roads you may go down that...
The DIY recharge kits are OK if all you have is a very slow loss though the shaft seal and everything else is good.If the system pressure is too low, the low switch will have already cut in and the clutch will not engage.
If the system pressure gets too high, the clutch will initially engage...
1) No refrigerant (#1 suspect)
2) frozen expansion valve, less likely as you would get some initial cooling
3) Clutch inop, hi/lo switch controlled, see above posts
4) Compressor or clutch defective
5) Bad shaft seal, leads to #1 (very common)Gauges are the lifeblood of this. Check the...
Thanks, Marty. I'll give it a try, and will post the results. I've done a few headlights and have the kits, so those pads and polishes should work pretty good.Maybe I should put in some sequencing LEDs KITT style...
I was smart and replaced the side lights and turn signals when parts were easy. I didn't replace the center garnish and while it is intact, it has yellowed.Has anyone found a way to reverse this? There's a number of techniques on the internet (vinegar, baking soda, peroxide, etc) but I'm...
The intake manifold was structurally fine after the cleaning. The casting is a little rough all over. My exhaust manifold had a 1.5" crack on top, and OMG a nearly completely across crack on the bottom. Needless to say I won't be putting that back on.I'm replacing (mostly) all the hoses in...
I'm ready to paint or powder coat the valve cover. The pro's:
More durable
More heat resistant
Less chippingThe con's
Harder to do 2 colors
Risk of blasting media getting into baffles
Can't do it myselfIf you have powder coated a valve cover,
Did you remove the baffle?
How did you...
Going to give it a try on my head rebuild. Several vendors show it as not shipping until September. Just ordered on Amazon for $59.89, shipping included, supposed to be in stock. The vendor is "Gasket Deals". It's rare to see this much price variation.
For those that aren't familiar with Model As:Built from 1928-1931, about 5 million world wide.
40hp inline 4, 200 cid
6V system, generator, not alternator.
Manual spark advance
Manual choke
Manual mixture
Mechanical brakes. That means metal rods, levers, and wedges.
3 speed, but no...
Phase 1 is to replace all hoses, clean and paint where needed, install the rebuilt head, fix what I find that's broken, and install all new timing components. Then get the car running well. Once I have a good mechanical baseline, I'll paint it. From there I'd like to step up the zip, likely...
I'm starting to transition from disassembly, frozen fasteners and cleaning, to painting, repairing and reinstalling. I decided to brighten up the intake manifold some and mimic the factory valve cover colors. Bead blasting, 2 coats of Dupicolor aluminum color engine paint and a Duplicolor...
Crap!!! And they were so pretty too with the red highlights. What I notice is not even a scratch under the bearing surface of the flange bolts... could they have been torqued to spec and still left that mirror finish?
That's it, thanks. 98% got tagged, but this slipped through due to the torch to get out the frozen bolt end and sandblasting. "Oh, I'll remember where that goes..."
I'm having a lot of parts blasted and repainted in the process of taking the head off. Perhaps in re-assembling it I'll see where this goes, but I'd feel better about being able to identify it.It has a 6x1.00 welded nut on it.Top sideUnderside. It's about 2.5"x4"Thanks!
What front seals are you talking about?FYI I just ordered a full set of OEM/Asin parts from JNZ and it totaled $418. (Belts, tensioners, pulleys, water pump) I saw higher prices out there for the same stuff, and lower prices involved non OEM with a lesser known quality uncertainty.I like...
I'm a well equipped amateur mechanic. Got my first set of Craftsman tools in college when I got my first car (Used FJ-40 Land Cruiser, worth 100k now, sigh) While I read the 'Pro' tools were better, I've never had a tool failure of any kind. Now that Sears sold Craftsman, I've been looking...
