Depends on the turbo really, 16Gs and above will produce more power the closer you get to redline. The wimpy T25s (stock 2G turbos) will give out around 5K-5 1/2K RPMs.

DSM transmissions aren't that bad, they hold a lot of power. My TSi AWD has been beaten to death and the transmission is about the only thing that hasn't gone wrong with it. They are notchy as hell (try speed shifting into 2nd, hard to hit that bi*** sometimes).

I think RWD is more fun outside of snow (in some cases in snow its more fun), however if you are looking to put down big horsies then AWD would be the way to go..you wouldn't have so many traction issues.
