I have a baby boy who loves my 1g. hes 1 now just turned 1 a month ago and my car is the only one he deliberatly crawls to get to. Congrats there a lot of fun and a lot of long nights lol. (I thinks that both applies to your son and our cars hahaha.)
did you say the coolant sesor plug has the wire wrapped around the blade? that coul be your problems if the coolant temp sensor isnt reading then the car wont start. I would fix that plug and wire problem. first its cheaper and the more likely cause if its the coolant temp sensor thats broke.
Sounds like the coolant temp senser is going out. It will cause those problems. Do an olms test on your temp sensor at running temp that will tell if its good or bad. that should clear you right up.

If you all look into motor all data online it will tell you what the flag time is. your flag time then you multiply it buy the labor rate. sounds high to me.

Heres the Answer to the problem. It was not the head, the turbo was toast i had to re-build it, the other part of the leak was a bunch of stuff. The OFH was leaking as well as the crank seel and oil pump shaft seel, along with camshaft seels. now its almost done and about to be back on the road...
We need more symptoms, is it bucking, cough, feel like a brick what? any CEL lights. it might just be a boost leek. do a leek down test and a compression test.
