    How many DSM´s are left

Sounds about right. All told I will have spent close to $4000 to restore my Talon more or less back to and in some ways better than original condition, not including tools I needed to buy to get it done. But only some of this was actual repairs, and most was standard maintenance replacement...

    How many DSM´s are left

Interesting. Is shipping from the US or Japan reasonable? Also, speaking of how Eclipses dominate, it's funny how so few people discuss Lasers. I wonder if they were always this rare. When I bought my Talon new in '92, I never even considered one. Didn't care much for the look or packages they...

need a dsm shop/mechanic in colorado

Did your mechanic replace the throwout bearing, fork & fulcrum, check and adjust clutch pedal play, check both cylinders for leaks and bleed everything thoroughly? Almost sounds like the clutch isn't fully releasing, meaning it's not fully engaging and is therefore slipping/dragging. Or the TOB...

Question about solder method to determine proper shim thicknesses (updated with numbers doing it the right way)

Ok, did it a third time, the right way this time, and got numbers that make a lot more sense. The 2 lower ones, the output shaft and front diff, were very close to the previous readings, but that makes sense as the diff doesn't have a top race to jam in too far and the output shaft I guess...

    How many DSM´s are left

I rarely see 1G's here in NYC, like maybe a handful of times a year. But I'm not looking that hard and don't drive that much these days. I have one myself, '92 Talon TSi AWD manual, and am in the latter stages of restoring it. Most definitely not for sale any time soon. I see 2G's & 3G's more...

Question about solder method to determine proper shim thicknesses (updated with numbers doing it the right way)

Thanks. I realized my mistake both when the readings were way off and just thinking about it. Hopefully I didn't damage anything by pounding on the races to get them all the way in (using race installation plates of course). But those races are really tough and the shims I end up putting will I...

Question about solder method to determine proper shim thicknesses (updated with numbers doing it the right way)

So I got my stacks reassembled with new parts and did the solder method yesterday, but many of the measured values seemed way off. Then I realized that I might have done it wrong. What I did was first install all new or removed bottom (closest to clutch/engine/bellhousing) races into the case...

    2G Brake line replacement options

You could always just cut the part of the broken line out and patch it with a short length of line with the proper fittings, unless the lines are all in bad shape, in which case you should replace them all, and as others have said can do it yourself if you feel up to it with nicopp and a double...
  9. Looking for a 6 bolt AWD flywheel!

Reply to question by 'XC92' on the classified ad 'Looking for a 6 bolt AWD flywheel!'

I decided to resurface it as it appears to still have enough surface left. Which one did you buy?

    Thieves Can’t Drive Manual

29 years and only one lame attempt to break in, when some bozo tried to use a house key to open the driver door. Fool broke off the tip and left the lock unusable for years until I finally got around to opening things up and removing the offending piece. And I lived in Manhattan for over 8 years...

    Thieves Can’t Drive Manual

Lots of parts one can remove to deter thieves. I used to drop my trans every time I parked it. Ok, not really, but that would certainly work.
  12. XC92

    Thieves Can’t Drive Manual

The ultimate security device, a manual transmission. Even better would be to remove the shifter when you park the car. I actually have a Multilock U-Lock locking the shifter in reverse. But it's 29 years old and probably easy to defeat by now. Shh, don't tell anyone.

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

Sorry for not getting back sooner. Yes, I ended up buying most of the parts from an online dealer based in Tallahassee, FL, mostly because the car's been on the street on stands for over a month now and I really need to get this all done and the car back on the ground and operable again, and...

1G 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Parts List

I agree, but coming from a comparatively much less knowledgeable perspective. But I do have a degree from engineering school and an IT background so I'm not entirely unfamiliar with working systematically and methodically and putting goals ahead of solutions. The solutions will follow from the...

1G 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Parts List

500HP? Wow, impressive. But, make sure the rest if the car will support it, especially the trans and suspension. I'm pretty sure that a stock trans will break with this much power from what I've read. You'll also need to upgrade the clutch and maybe flywheel.I hope you know what you're doing...

1G 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Parts List

Ah, so you're going the hot rod tuning route? No wonder your list is so long, and I wish you well. Myself, I just want to restore it more or less to original shape, with a few modest upgrades here and there like poly bushings and a K&N air filter. I'm the original owner (yes, of a '92!), and...

1G 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Parts List

Well as I wrote the big exception is parts that aren't intact, solid, proper and uncompromised. Anything like that you throw out or use as a paperweight or makeshift tool. But if it's just some scratches, surface rust and minor pitting, I don't see why it can't be restored. As for the frame...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

Do you have anything in stock and ready to ship? I can always order the parts you need to get from Mitsu directly, which I assume would get to me faster.Btw that mod you do on center diffs so they can accept Torrington bearings, not something I really need for my stock situation, right?

Also, unless the control arms are bent, cracked or otherwise unusable, you can just remove them, remove the ball joints and bushing, clean them up and paint them, then press in new ball joints and bushings. That's what I did. Did the same with all 4 brake calipers, cross and center members...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

I started doing just that, using a cheap HF hand brush that just fits, plus cleaning the case sections themselves, inside and out, and the flat mating parts as well.I'll probably paint the exterior. I know you use Aluma-Blast (or whatever it's called), but I cheaped out and got Duplicolor...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

Thanks. I think the springs are discontinued anyway, just checking. The case bolts have some old RTV and minor rust and aluminum oxide but nothing out of the ordinary so I think they can be cleaned and reused, and if not, I'll get replacements.

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

So I'll get the shallow synchro since that's what I have in there now, and I was going to replace the TOB clip but was just curious if it's an occasional fail point.I was going to replace the staked nuts (in fact I already bought them last year), roll pins, fill/drain plug, reverse switch &...

2G Resurrecting a 97 GST that has sat for 7 years

If there's power and gas in the tank but it shows empty then either the sending unit's not working or connected or there's a gap in the wiring to the ECU or a blown fuse. Or the actual gauge or its connection or fuse is bad.Sounds like an electric issue all-around, including starting the engine.

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

Tim, I just sent you a parts list to your business email. Thanks. Two more questions though. One, about choosing between the thick and shallow 1st gear synchro, it looks like I have the shallow one, MD742419, so I’ll probably get that. But I see that while it has 3 groupings of teeth going...

1G 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Parts List

Well, it depends on where you try to buy them. I'm running into this issue myself right now as I need to buy a bunch of parts for a trans rebuild I'm doing. There's Mitsubishi dealers, local, online and direct from Japan, specialist vendors such as are on this site, local and online auto parts...

1G 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Parts List

If you really want to go all-out then go for it, and acquiring parts now is probably a good idea as many appear to be slowly being discontinued and hard to impossible to find, at least in new or decent condition. Check with the experts here as to which ones to really stock up on now.

2G Resurrecting a 97 GST that has sat for 7 years

If it's been sitting this long you want to replace the old gas as it's pretty nasty at this point and can damage the injectors and engine if run. I'd also remove the plugs, squirt in some oil and turn the engine over by hand a few times via the front crank by the left front wheel opening.Also...

Wow, I assume that either you expect a REALLY nice Christmas bonus or this is a list of all the possible parts you'll get but the list of things you'll end up getting will be much shorter, because this is basically a new car other than the body from my quick scan of it.Whatever you end up...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

If I'm going single-spring on 1st & 2nd, which it looks like I am, is there a preference as to which of MD742419 or MD745477 to get for 1st synchro? And can MD742419 even work with just one spring or does it really call for two?As for MD745479, sorry if you answered this before, but it's the...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

As an example Amayama quotes ~2 weeks for MD747643 but who knows when it would really arrive (and I suspect the Olympics and the new Covid variant will slow things down), and in any case even if it really was 2 weeks it's actually more expensive. So I'll skip that and get these parts...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

So either MD747643 if I'm willing to wait for it to arrive from Japan, or buy the hub/slider and synchros separately with same mechanical result?I didn't realize that MD749414 is the correct hub/slider for my '94 trans since the Mitsu catalog lists it as MD746144, and dealers give MD742468 as...

1G Replace rear sway bar links on AWD?

They want you to replace the entire arms, not just DSMs but in general (I ran into the same issue with my mom's Camry recently). It kind of makes sense, too, since it's not THAT much more expensive and a lot less work. But my take is if it ain't broke don't fix or replace it, and only fix or...

1G Replace rear sway bar links on AWD?

Well, I used a "deluxe" ball joint press kit from Advance Auto as a loaner to replace the fronts last year with Moogs, and it went pretty smoothly. This is what I was intending to do on the rears, with the exact same BJs. Not enough miles put on the car since I did this but it felt and handled...

1G Replace rear sway bar links on AWD?

I'm replacing the rear ball joints, which officially can't be replaced so there's no OEM version and you have to replace the entire control arms (which I'm not going to do), with Moogs, so I figured might as well go with Moog on the links too. It's what I did on the fronts last year and it seems...

1G Replace rear sway bar links on AWD?

Pretty much everything's stock on the car including both sway bars and will almost certainly stay that way so this isn't a concern. I'm more concerned about quality. If I ever sell the car and they want to upgrade the sway bar, they'll have to figure out what to do.

2G snapped the ole' timing belt : P

I'm definitely going to replace the TB soon and when I do I'll probably replace everything, idlers, tensioners, water pump, balance belt, etc. The only questions are with which parts and how soon. I can't get to it now anyway since I'm rebuilding the trans and don't want to complicate things...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

I contacted Josh with a long parts list and he got back to me quickly. Unfortunately a few of the parts I absolutely need are backordered, not just through him but through dealers, so I guess I have to wait on the rebuild, unless Jack's or Tim have them.Meanwhile, the car sits on stands on the...

2G snapped the ole' timing belt : P

Yes, I'm aware of that, and will do so (although my stock setup doesn't need some of these more rugged parts). I'm just asking if the parts that tend to actually fail are other than the TB itself.
  43. XC92

2G snapped the ole' timing belt : P

Wait, so when doing a TB change for preventive maintenance every 60k miles or X years, it's the other parts you really need to replace and less so the actual belt? I think I've read that the balance belt tends to break, skip or come off and take everything else with it. Is this so?
  44. XC92

    Website check.

I haven't ordered from them but they just got back to me within 24 hours on a longish list of parts I need or might need, with availability info, broken down into within a few days, within a few weeks, within a few months, and discontinued. There's some sketchy reviews for them online, like how...

Any way to find out actual availability of OEM parts?

I'm starting to hear back from dealers and vendors and while most of the parts I need are available, a few are either backordered and might have to be sent from Japan, or are no longer being made and available.Thankfully the latter are mostly minor parts that don't HAVE to be replaced but it...

Thanks. Will do.And, an aside, and yes, I am hijacking my own thread here (which I assume is ok), but having pretty much taken apart the entire trans, except the control shaft which seems to be in fine shape plus I couldn't get the solid pin out, I am amazed at how solid and well-built most of...
