So, what is the condition of your timing belt and tensioner? Are they old/new? Is it easy to push the plunger into the hydrolic tensioner or do you need a clamp? Your cams have nothing to do with this like what Mike said. Parts can crap out over time and you may need to replace something.

I would actually want to use the heim joint for adjustability on the length or throw. I makes sense and unfortunately these cable tend to break and stretch like the parking brake.

That will work just fine. You need to make sure and find a way to get it to hook up to your oil cooler.In my honest opinion, I would get a new oil cooler (earl's plumbing?) and hook that up. Its completely up to you. I just think it would be easier to just get a new setup.
