I was driving up to tahoe on sautrday, nice and easy, and the car started to shutter really bad. I looked at the temp and this was the first time I have seen it above the half way mark. It was just a little over, nothing to worry about. Plus it was really warm out. So I pull over and let the car sit for a bit and try it agian, nothing. I also have a CEL now. So I turn around and get the car home so I can take a look at it the next day.

I hooked the pocket logger up to it to see what the CEL is and I got a misfire in cylinder #2 as well as an undefind P1400. I then checked the plugs and sure enought the cylinder #2 plug was dirty, real dirty. I cleaned it, along with all the other plugs to see if that would help and it did, but it was still mifiring. So I installed some new NGK BPR6ES's and a new valve cover just because. The new plugs helped, but didnt fix the problem. Then I replaced the wires, agian it helped but didnt resolve the problem.

My local speed shop recommended I replace the coil packs. But personally I would rather narrow the problem down if at all possible before I spend $150. Then I got the idea that maybe, just maybe the timing was off for some wacky reason. I reset the ECU and the car ran flawlessly for 15 minutes. I let it warm up then drove it. No shuttering, built boost just like it usually does. Then I pulled over and shut the car off. When I restarted it, it was running fine. I hooked the logger up to it agian and no codes were reported, yet. I got the car back home and as the turbo timer was counting down the car started to shutter and the CEL popped back on. Sure enough, the same two errors were back.

What I would like to know is there any way I can narrow this problem down without just randomly buying parts that *might* fix the problem? Does anyone have any tests I can run? Can someone tell me what the code P1400 is? Does anyone have any suggestions? I have another mode of transportation for now but I need to get it fixed asap. Thank you in advance to anyone who helps me out.

Check your coil packs over real good, they might have shorted or melted on one of the receps (where the plug wire goes into the coil) . I have had a couple do that. If one of them is burnt, you will have to replace it.

So just visually inspect them? Or is there a test I can do to them?

Just visually, Look for cracks or burns. The other test that you could do, is a resistance test with an ohm mwter, but i dont remeber what the specs are. The haynes book, i think, tells what it should be.

Ok Ill give it a look tomarrow. Ill post the results of the visual inspection. Thanks.

I looked at them but the problem is I dont know how they are supposed to look then they are new. So Ill just describe what I saw.

Starting from left to right- When I removed the spark plug wire from the coil I looked down in there and the metal surface was gold. On the next one over the surface was silver. The next one over it was gold and looked either dirty or had a small half circle burn in it. The last one was gold.

Seeing that the third one over could possibly be my problem I noticed thats the number two cylinder in the firing order. So it this my problem you think? Also can anyone shed some light on what the error P1400 is?

Good posibility that the coil is bad if ther is burning on the inside. Expecialy since that is the one that is missing.

I went ahead and ordered the new coil packs from Reno Mitsu and they will be here friday. The install doesnt look to hard, just a couple of bolts. The spacing is kind of tight though, but what isnt with these cars?

Can anyone help out with that undefined error P1400?

coil packs are easy to instal.. js 4 bolts and unistall the spark plug wires from them and ur good.. also. check your cam sensors. take it apart. 2 bolts beside the intake.. clean it off. and re lube it with oil.

I replaced the coil packs and the car ran perfect for about 45 minutes. Then the CEL came back on with the same two errors as before. Im dropping it off at the dealership tomarrow to have them hook it up to a real diagnostic machine and do a compression test.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what the error P1400 means!?

I got the car back from the dealer. It burnt some valves. Guess its time for me to build that 6 bolt or get rid of it. Thanks for the help guys.
