Please see mods...

Tonight I finally got my car back from the dealer after they performed the t-case recall. I finally felt confident enough to go ahead and open it up on the new set up with the EVO 16G. It pulled pretty good at 12psi (outside air temo was about 60 deg)...I upped it to 15psi and it did not feel like it made any difference in power. I was expecting this set up to to pull a bit harder. What is the safest psi I can run with out my walbro or front mount installed??? I was hoping to run 17-18psi now and about 19-22 once my walbro, fmic, s-afc and dattalogger are installed. Also, when I got home there was a strange noise coming from the timing belt area. If you heard a window break about three houses down that would be what it sounds like...it comes and goes very quickly about once every t-belt revolution. It isnt too loud but I can hear it with both windows down and the hood open. My timing belt only has about 500 miles on it as does the water pump, tensioner pully, idler pully and tensioner. I also pulled the upper t-belt cover off today before my drive so I am not sure the noise wasnt always there just more prominent since the cover is off. It sounds like it goes away when I rev it. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks.

My belt is pretty much new with only 500 miles on it. You bring up a good point regarding the timing which leads me to another question. I did go by the vfaq and made sure everything lined up but I also advanced it to about 10 btcd using the cas...nothing was disconnected or grounded. I just used a t-light on the crank pulley. Should 1gs only be at 5 btcd???? I cant wait till I get my pocket logger in next week.

Another EVO 16G question....are these turbos happier at higher boost levels?? In other words, am i just not in its "operating range"? Maybe it likes making power at or above 20psi????

yes they seem to like 18 psi and above more...at least my big16g ported and clipped did...

I would recommend leaving it at 12psi though if you don't have a fuel pump yet...and after you install all your mods...I'd say 19-20psi should be good.

as far as that other noise...that is just strange to me...I'd have to hear it to be able to figure it out...

you are forgetting about injectors....don't make a mistake on fuel mods!

He was referring to your cam timing and not your spark timing. Check the marks with a straight edge across all 4 marks. Also make sure the crank mark lines up when the cams do.

Your base spark timing should be 5 degrees BTDC when the refrence ground is made. I can't remember the plug off the top of my head but it will be in your manual.

I will turn down the boost to about 12-13 to be safe. My pocket logger comes in Thursday and my safc (knob style) is already here...sounds like I need injectors too. I guess I will go with 660's to be safe. There goes another $250.00 How do these guys get into the 12's or 11's with nearly stock engines/fuel mods? I am planning on running race fuel at the track with about 22-maybe 23psi.
I know the timing must be off so I will adjust it today going by the v-faq. As for the noise I am not sure. There is no doubt it is coming from the timing belt area...around the cam gears or just below. Again, it could be normal drive noise but I am not sure. It is not affecting idle at all. I will try to get a very short clip of it today...actually, can anyone tell me how to post a vid clip? I can do a search and find out. Thanks for the help.

I hope this works...I dont have too much experience creating vids... Hopefully you can just click on the link to see the vid. You may have to turn your sound up a bit to hear the chattering sound.

It starts off with my timing light on the crank marks. With the wire on the pass side grounded this is where it was...pretty much right at 5btdc so I left it alone. Throughout the whole vid, you can here the chattering sound coming from the t-belt area...sounds like a faint windchime or something...I am beginning to think it is normal. On a side note...I reved the car and it almost seems like the sound does not correspound to the engine speed...weird, but I could be wrong. Also, it only does this when the engine is warm...thanks fellas.
