I just took my car to the dealer a few days ago to have them change the timing belt and flush the cooling system. I also asked them to change the transmission and transfer case fluid but they told me it wasn't necessary and that they were "solid". What ever the hell that means. The owner's manual says to change the tranny and transfer case fluid every 15,000 miles but the dealer says don't bother? So should I change the fluids or not?

I hear the new tranny fluids are bad because of the detergeants that can damage the internals. I was told this by several different mechanics, including a family friend. If ya do a google search you can prolly find out what fluid to use.

Well the only time changing tranny fluid is bad is if it hasn't been changed in a REALLY long time (like 10 years) - the fluid gets thicker or something over time and "keeps the tranny together" - if you change the fluid your tranny will prolly fail (if it has never been changed). But change it anyway and I'll bet it will shift better. Since your car is a 99 you (should) be fine.

^^ I would like to see some proof of this. I seriously doubt this logic

nope thats correct they even told us that in school :thumb:

yep you cant change reallllly old fluid if its been in there forever, or your tranny will fall apart, but like he said your car is a 99' so go for it. oh get some nose plugs too... cuz it is going to stink! not as bad as burned up differential though ;)

Here's what I heard-

Automatic - change every 30,000 miles

Manual - never - shop teacher said some trannys just don't work smoothly with new fluid (grind, etc), and I think I remember reading this on a Subaru message board a long time ago, too.

Since I've had a couple of tranny leaks my fluid has been changed more than I'd like.

In comparison, shifting seems to be just as difficult as it was before the changes.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to go ahead and change the fluid myself. I don't have a choice, I'm starting to feel my clutch slip when I accelerate. I still have 1,000 miles and 3 months left on my powertrane warranty, but the %$#@&*% dealer says there's "a good 5 months of life left in the clutch". SOBs.

first all its becuase you have some moron that doesnt want to do it, not that it shouldnt be done. Also dont ask them to change it tell them to change it. IMO for something like that just do it yourself cause they will rape you , after all thats why they made dealerships. :thumb: :talon:

That link is dead---if someone could provide a link w/ step by step tranny fluid check/changing/etc...that would fantastic. Thanks in advance.

HELP!!

Troy

put royal purple diff fluid in your transfercase and rear end. and put either royal purple synchromax or bg synchroshift in the tranny.

BG synchroshift fixed my grinding problems in third, car had about 120,000 on my TSi when I did it, runs like a champ now.
