Since my GTP was just totaled by an idiot in an SUV I need to go car shopping again after only having the GTP for 1 month.

So I am considering a 97-99 GST Vert, 97-99 GSX, 95-98 Talon Tsi AWD or 95-98 TSi.

Pros & cons of these cars?

I only plan on lightly modding it right now. Maybe down the road go nuts with it. I need something reliable for all seasons and fun to drive.

What sort of mileage do they start to have problems and what are the problems?

Any common problems with these cars?

Also what options were available?

I really enjoyed the HUD & automatic dual climate control on my GTP.

Thanks :)

hehehehehehehehe

buy a dsm as your daily driver

hehehehehehehehe

all around great cars are the GSX's TSi AWD's

don't get FWD for all season, because they won't go anywhere in the snow...

but again DSM's can be really reliable... but I treat my car like a baby, and it breaks down on me 1 time a month so far

1st month timing belt went

2nd month clutch went

3rd month electrical went

and imstill waiting what happens next month :p

overall I would say the best reliable mitsu is a 2gnt...

but again no snow traction and no ballz... (stock anyway)

Theres a topic guys.
How about you two stop bickering and get back on it.

Period.

But I will say this.
If you run 15-20psi normally. Then it starts snowing and you don't TURN THE BOOST DOWN and you loose control. It's your own fault. If hazards get worse, your driver skills should compensate for the adjustments in the weather. Turn the boost down in bad situations!

Any DSM is a good, reliable car until you start trying to make a racer out of it. Or, more of a racer. 130K on my stock '94, 85K on my stock '95.

If _you_ don't break it, they hold up just fine.

When shopping for a turbo'd one, look to find stock piping and BOVs. If the other owner's not taken that step, he's not started on breaking it down.

Any more pinheaded BITCHING and Mr. Ness will be by.

LOCK NESS.

I am sick of people saying DSMs are unreliable cars. The only reason they become unreliable is because people upgrade the car beyond what it was designed to go.

At the same time, other people buy cars from owners that had very little maintance skills and beat the crap out of the car by roasting/racing every time they got.

DSMs can be reliable if you can find a seller that has kept it in good condition and practiced proper maintance, as well as didn't take it out every weekend to race.

The reason DSMs are seen as unreliable is because they are fast cars out the door and are at a price range people can afford. Thus you get people that purchase them, beat the crap out of them and expect them to last.

In otherwords, like any car a DSM can be reliable as a daily driver if well taken care of.

I love my car. I wouldn't trade it for a awd at all. I've had it for almost 2 years. I bought it with 46k on it and i haven't had a problem since. I do have it modded decently with the stock turbo though. Its fun to drive and i have no crank play at all!!! I heard from a mitsu mechanic that 95's with a may 94 or earlier production date are the most uncommon 2g's to have crankwalk and so far it seems very true to me. I do drive it hard but i do change the oil religiously every 3000 miles with mobil 1 synthetic. I've raced it, hit 8000 rpm's or more several times on accident. (never more than 8500) Got it up to 142 no problem. And i drive it to and from school, 500 mile round trip about 6-7 times a year. Never broke down, never had a problem. I'm sure i'll have problem when it gets older but its fine right now.

dsm's can be reliable. The main problem people have with them is there cheap and lazy. So if a part breaks they figure they'll drive it until they have time to fix it. Unfortunately in most cases it will break something else. So as long as you take care of your car and do things right the first time, it will be a great car. You'll probably need to do mccc and get new motor mounts though if the car has over 50k.

How hard are they to replace on these cars?

Like others have said, DSM's are as reliable as you make them. If you ignore common maintainence, it will not be reliable as things are going to break.

If it's one thing I've learned about these cars, if you leave a problem with it unresolved/fixed, it WILL come back to bite you in the ass.

I call my car the Karma car for a reason.....

:dsm:

110K miles and no problem here :thumb: *knocks on wood*

Who said FWD sucks in the snow? I have snow tires on and they're doing great. To date, I haven't gotten stuck once yet. And believe me, my driveway does get packed with snow.

I think AWD is actually worse when it comes to sliding all over the place in snow, if they grab its great but if you slide you are sliding all over the place.

Turbo > Supercharger

I've not heard of any supercharger kits for DSMs, but even if there were, they wouldn't be very popular. Turbocharging is proven and almost as easy as supercharging, with better gains and less engine stress.

If you want, try searching on this forum and others about supercharging vs. turbocharging.

I've done all of my maintainence and then i did the mods and the talon is putting up with my abuse for a while now. I usualy only drive it on the weekends and lately since it snowed. i'm verry happy with it, but when i got it it was smoking pretty bad, but usualy a set of valve seals will fix major smoking on a dsm w/ 100k+ miles. A pretty big job, but not too bad if you already have the timing belt off. Well i'll be driving my car today....ps watch out for boost creep once you get mods.
Gooberlog '93 Tsi AWD with 147,400 miles and running, in the snow i might add. :talon:

95 AWD A/T talon with 130k totaly unmolested car i bought from a 85 yr old guy who bought it new. is my daily driver

My talon non turbo does fine in the snow. Course you don't want to go through over a foot of snow but i'm thinking neither does anyone in any car that low to the ground. Not to mention you have a parking break ;) If your car ain't turning well. Make sure you know how to use it and theres no one coming.

My car sucks ass in the snow. It is lowered alot and i haven't turned down my boost but it really is all over the place. It doesn't want to go and it really doesn't want to stop. But i do have a lead footand its hard for me to ease the gas...

You are right. this was my first snow with AWD and it's alot scarier than my GST. Cause just like you said once you start to slide you keep sliding. Yea awd will move in the snow but controling is a whole different story.

A good set of tires on a AWD make all the difference in the world in the snow....AWD is a BLAST in the snow with the right tires, you'll never want FWD again. :)

How hard are the 2Gs to work on? Are routine things like a tune up, t-stat, fuel filter a bi*** to do?

i started doing maintanance by myself and i was surprised on how easy it is to work on these cars. They look intimidating but they are not.

So what options were avaiable on 97+ GS-Ts & GSXs?

DSM's are fairly easy to work on if you know how to get rusted bolts out ;) Tuneups and regular maintenance is a simple task, as for the fuel filter, be ready to have bloody hands and swear up a storm =)
