I don't understand the whole dyno thing, does it vary by state to state or something where you can't have more than X HP/T? Do they dyno every car that comes through emissions? Seems like a waste of time. Elect me president, and I shall do away with emissions, you will also recieve federal aid to buy mods. :)

In MA, when they dyno your car (non-awd, awd they just test at idle and rev and hold it at 3k i think), they check toxin levels in your exhaust for 3 different toxins and you have be be below a certain limit for each one or you fail and they but a nice R sticker on your car (i know LOL) . Right now our emission testing is suspended i think because it's really messed up and inaccurate. They don't go WOT or anything, it does read HP because it prints all the info on the emission test print out and my old v8 Firebird layed down 20hp haha . I did see that stuff at pep boys, they claim you just pour it in your tank and your guranteed to pass or your money back. No idea how it works though:confused:

It's not that kind of dynamometer- or, it's not being used in that way, if it could be. They're not testing for power, just running the engine under load to get a less-inaccurate reading of the emissions (they claim).

The dyno for the California test is some $40K. AWD cars get to skip it because they only have 2-wheel dynos.

They test your car at idle and then they will rev it up to around 3k I think and hold it there for about a minute or so.

In chicago you have emissions testing? I guess I'm glad the whole state doesnt have to to do it... I'm sure I'd pass but It still seems like a pain.

Yeah, I know of a trick with my truck, because other people on the forums I'm a member of had the same problem. I guess the engine in my truck doesn't take to kindly to certain state emmission testings. In case you want to know the engine in it, it's the ka24e 4-cyl. What I've heard of guys doing is putting dry gas in I believe it was and this would somehow enable them to pass the test. Not sure if it would work for everyone though. Good luck

Dry gas?! Hey! I can't pass with my S13 and it sports the SOHC KA, maybe you can fill me in so i can get this thing back on the road :p

ya, they sell dry gas at autozone, and it works, my freind with hollowed out cats on his accord couldnt pass, he put that stuff in and passed

All you need to do is fix the CEL, and you will pass.
On 96 and newer car they only scan for emission
codes, so if there are no warning lights and no
stored codes in your ECU they will not sniff the
exhaust. (put your cat in they might check under
the car if you have an exhaust.

ya as of right now i have no cel's and i will put my stock cat back on just to make sure. i should pass if they just check for cel's. if for some odd reason they rev my car and i fail ill go back next time with my cat and that stuf from autozone.

Make sure that there are no stored codes. The codes that caused
the light to come on are still in the ECUs memory. If any of those
codes were emissions related it could fail. Have your ECUs memory
read out and erased. (make sure it's done a couple days before
you go its possible to check how long ago memory was cleared)
