Hey guys Just a quick question.

Lately After driving my car for even a little while I get out of it and I smell this burning smell coming from the car. Problem is I can't tell where it is coming from.
One condition I thought was maybe my cat converter but I changed my theory after I got our first snow this year, I went out to go start my car and it started fine but the second after I started it the belts started to squeel like crazy, but if I reved it up once the squeeling went away.

At that point I started to smell the exact same burning smell inside the car. This has happened to me twice now. It only seems to happen when I cold start it. Any thought on what it could be? Belts causing the burning smell or what?

I've had my 1g eclipse for about 6 months and one of the first things I had to do was replace the alternator. Shortly after, I began hearing squealing coming from those belts. The squealing noise rivaled the sound that banshees make. I didn't take action until my battery died.

Tighten the belts or even replace them if they look worn.

id suggest doing mccc treatment (mopar combustion chamber cleaner) perhaps alot of carbon is built up and getting burnt out with the extra moisture running through your engine on top of denser air due to the weather. If it only does it once its been sitting i'd almost be positive its that extra water/moisture working like water injection, raising the octane of the fuel and lowering engine temps along with cleaning out the carbon deposits. Good luck, get some belt dressing to stop the squeeks. Try tightening the belts too, also remember a belt may squeek from being to tight perhaps the colder weather shrank the belt causing it to be to tight.

roadtalontsi: I think I've seen you recommend MCCC a couple times recently, and was wondering if you know where some may be obtained. As far as I've heard, the feds banned one of the substances in the cleaner, so it's no longer being produced.

Thanks

WHOA. I was just about to post the same question. I popped my hood and i smell a burning smell and it smells like its coming from the driver side ...Prob Alternator? Its faint but once i open my windows and rev a little high it gets more burnty smelling.

In my case, I was having a charging problem with a new alternator i had installed that stemmed from the belt being too loose. The squealing was just the icing on the cake.

I have alot of smells coming from under the hood. I don't know if it's your alternator, but if you're worried you could use an alternator/battery checker.

yea i do have chirping also, only on cold nights or morning. It sometimes turns into a squeal. Odd?

I changed the belts while back, they been squealing ever since during cold starts. I think they squeal when too lose or too tight. When I turn the steering wheel , the sound changes which make me think it's the steering pump belt. When I roll down the window and keep the button pressed down, sound changes. Turn on the AC.. you get the picture. I have been playing with tightening and losening of the belts for a while now. The squealing gets better but can never get the right combo. Maybe there is an alignment issue with the pulleys. The power steering pump sounds kindda funny too.

Also, If you have not change the caps on your ecu yet, you might want to check it. Prior to my ECU went on me, I would smell something burnning while I'm driving once a while for 15 second. Smells kindda like burnning antifreez.

I would love to know how you solve the squealing problem. Good luck.
