Heres a list of differences on the 1st generation Eclipses Turbo weather u have Manual or Automatic..

Auto 1G cars have
- smaller turbochargers
- smaller injectors (390cc)
- a 'power/economy' switch located next to the shift lever
- ECUs designed for the smaller injectors
- cams designed to produce more low-end torque [1G only]

Manual 1G cars have:
- bigger turbochargers
- larger injectors (450cc)
- a nifty little coin holder next to the shift lever, a fave place to put electronic widgets of one sort or another.
- ECUs designed for the larger injectors
- ECUs designed to produce less low-end torque [1G only]

Thats it.. i like knowing my injectors and turbo are larger!

There are no internal engine differences between the 2G auto and manual cars. The turbo/injectors/etc are the same.

Later,
Matt

Heh heh. This 1.8L Automatic also has the coin holder. :)
woot! Livin' Large Yo!

anyone know if turning the overdrive switch on or off on a 2g a/t makes you faster or slower?

overdrive makes you quicker but i wouldnt use it until higher speeds??? i like the extra kick when im going 60..wait...am iruning my car now??

Overdrive is like the fourth gear on the Automatic. If you look at the gears, you have 1, 2, and D. Those are the first three gears. If you have overdrive off while driving and engage it while you are goin about 60-70, you will feel the shift and will pull like a next gear...as far as I know.

hmm so if you leav it on, it will jsut shift up to 4 gears? the manual (for the car) says that with overdrive off it will lock the tranny in 3 gears, there are only 4 rihgt? the dealer said it was a 5 speed auto??

wouldn't turning the OD on during a race damage the control unit or tranny itself? sure seems like it would.

i always thought i had a 5 speed a/t tranny as well with the OD on..........

No! Alot of you are pretty wrong. OD is the extra gear. ATs only have a 4 speed. A car without OD will only be a 3 speed. If you switch OD off you wont have the fourht gear available. If you ratchet shift your AT you can jus shift into fourth by putting OD on.

what exactly does the economy power button do it seems like it changes the shifting rpms but im not sure its just that whenever i use it to race it shifts at like 6000

The economy/power button when on economy saves gas. I beleive .. correct me if im wrong burns the same mixture of gas/air twice. So it saves gas. And power gives you more power and higher rpms like you said. Now I could be wrong so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a 97 tsi A/T & the more i drive it the better i like it. The o/d button is just another gear. Say u are riding down the road about 55 or 60 mph another car pulls up beside u to play, instead of manually pulling it from o/d to 2nd, which its not good to do that anyway. All u have to do is take it out of o/d & stomp it & it'll down shift to 2nd & take off like a rocket. If u leave it in o/d & stomp it it takes longer b/c it has to downshift to 3rd then 2nd. These cars pull like a #@%#@%#@%#@%#@% from a 20mph roll in 3rd with the o/d off.

When I recently went to the track I tried both ways, with o/d off and on. I got better traps with it off. 96mph vs 92. It allows 3rd to rev higher, making more power, at least thats my experience with it.

Yeah its exactly another gear with it off it cant go up to overdrive. So u can get it up to speed and where the rpms are pretty high and go to over drive. If u leave it on it should shift into overdrive itself but u have control of when to put it into over drive So it would be the smartest thing to get it up there and shift when u feel ready. Some ppl say that as soon as u hit the OD button it goes into OD. But as far as I know it needs to be running the right rmps in D to shift.

what were your times?

My best time was [email protected] with overdrive off.

Before the light in my head went off to take o/d off, the best I could do was [email protected] was all the same day, same track.

I have webcams and the car pulls like crazy 4-6 grand so having the rpms higher without o/d helped a lot.
