Heres the deal, ive been looking at a 96 Talon tsi awd it has 74k miles and is in pretty good condition, timing belts were recently replaced and it just needs very minor body work. I talked the guy down to 5,500 but Im a newbie and i wanted to do a little research before i bought it. The main reason why i didnt take it home was cause of the engine, there is a Hyndai valve cover on it, and the dealer didnt know much about the car but he said the guy who owned it before put it on after he replaced the timing belt cause it was stronger. I took it to a mechanic across the street and he said that Talons all have different engines and this one came stock with a Hyndai engine he said that you can have 2 of the same exact year and model talons and they can have different engines stock, Bassically i just wanna now what the deal with this is? and is this is true if the Hyndai engine is good?

I will need to make my decision on buying it pretty soon so please help me out

No such thing as a Hyundi powered DSM (unless someone stupid spent the time and money putting the old Tiburon 4cyl engine into the car). I'm unaware if a hyundi valve cover will fit in a DSM.

Either the car has a Mitsubishi 4g63 (turbo 2gs) engine or the Crysler 420A (NA 2gs).

If it's a TSI then it WILL have the 4g63 Mitsubishi engine in it.

To solve your problem. Just look and see if there is a turbo haning off the exhaust manifold. Look under the car at the rear end and see if there is a differential in back. Or run the VIN# and it will tell you the model (trim) of the car. Look at the lables on the inside of the car door, or the tags on the underside of the hood, you have tons of options but asking people who can't see the car isn't the best choice.

its a TSI turbos right there AWD just has a hyndai valve cover and the mechanic told me that Eagle cars will come stock with Hyndia engines or various other engines. i just wanna know if thats true the valve cover says DOHC engine on it

go ahead and buy it a friend of mine put a huyndai valve cover on his 95 gst, yes it fits, and yes it is still a 4g63, you can pm him about it his name on here is My_gst95 :thumb:

Some Hyundais came with 4g63's believe it or not. So the valve covers are interswapable. I should know for a fact, i bought one and put it on my 2G for a while (thanks 1badtsi LOL). Is it so hard to believe just because its a Korean car? I guess its just a surpising to people when you explain that a plymoth has the same motor as an eclipse.

oh yeah one other thing the mechanic told me, around the valve cover gasket there was minor leakege like it wasnt dirpping or anything but i touched it and some got some oil on my finger, and this guy said thats normal leakage for all cars

If the mechanic you took it too already didnt do it, do a compression test and make sure your numbers are around 170-180 on all 4 cylinders. Compression numbers can tell you alot about a car...especially if your going to plop more then 5 grand down on an investement. Take a test drive and do some hard left turns to see if the clutch sticks. Look at your idle when coming to stoplights and see if the needle is mostly solid or jumpy. If the vavle cover gasket is leaking oil, make them replace it. They shouldn't be selling a car in halfass condition anyways.

Did that mechanic have a really pointy skull, like Zippy the Pinhead?

My guess is that whoever replaced the valve cover gasket did the remarkably simple move of cracking the eggshell-porcelain thing, and instead of being fussy about what name was cast into the top of it, undertook to obtain a cover that more importantly didn't leak. The "Hyundai" cover is just that, a cover from an engine that'd been in a Hyundai, and it's an easy fix. It has nothing to do with your engine, and -despite what Zippy there tells you- Hyundai (and many other makers) used Mitsubishi engines for years- no Talon ever had a "Hyundai" engine.

Depending on the extent of the body damage, that sounds from here like a pretty good price for the car.

That oil seepage may stop if the cam cover is GENTLY snugged-up, but they are more fragile than you expect to find on valve covers, so whoever does it needs to be aware of this (conversely, Datsun 510 and Z car covers were stout enough that the problem was the other way around, and it was very common to snap the hold-down bolts- kind of a trade off; easy versus cheap). Or, perhaps the next replacement might say "MITSUBISHI" on it.

And a compression check is a good idea.
