Today, I let my friend drive my car. I have been really easy on the car and taken easy until I can check everything out or have it checked out by a mechanic (I just got the car). He got on it a lot harder than I do, much to my dismay. After he had floored it a couple times, he started to drive normally. We were listening to a squeal that I was trying to determine the source (most likey brake related), when all of a sudden we heard a new squeal which we figured was a belt. The we heard a snap and pretty much all the lights on the dash came on, but the car still drove. The power steering was gone, and the heat quickly rose and we could smell coolant. We were able to get it back to his driveway, and we checked the belts, sure enough one was missing (we found it hanging off the bottom of the car). I am not sure if it is the balance shaft belt or not, as I can't find any pictures or diagrams that show where it is. It is to the right of where the timing belt is, below another belt. I have not received my chiltons manual yet and just don't know what is what yet. Is this the balance shaft belt? The other belt appears to not have been damaged, as I read many are when the balance shaft belt breaks. I also read about balance shaft eliminator kits. Is it a good idea to do this mod? It sounds like the balance shaft is more of a nuisance than its worth, cause of the placement of the belt. I would appreciate any help or insight on this matter. Thanks. Here is a pic of the belts. You can see the one belt, as well as the wheel with the missing belt.

-It look like your power steering belt's gone, it goes from there to the water pump. you can't see the balance shaft belt, you have to remove that silver plastic cover on top(timing belt), remove all the belts on the side, remove the lower timing belt cover, then you can see the balance shaft belt.

Wow, thanks man. Thats a huge relief. I think I will look into changing all the belts anyway, as this one was pretty worn, and I am pretty sure that the rest of the belts have not been changed either. Seems like it would be a good preventative maintenance.

STFU. I asked a simple question. If you feel the need to flame, then don't say anything at all. We drove it maybe a couple hundred feet, MAYBE. And crawling on the side of the road with the hazards on, not driving it normally. Why do so many people here flame?

-Not many, just a few.

-In regard to eliminating the balance shaft belt, read the instruction on the vfaq.com, that's not a simple task if you haven't done a timing belt before, if you're interest in working on your own car, I suggest you get a cdrom 'back-up' version of the dealer's manual, Chilton or other manual leave out many details.

Cool, thanks. I'll look into getting the cd-rom. I am not sure if I would do the elimination process myself or not. I don't think I am going to do the timing belt myself. At least not this first time. Not until I learn a little more and feel comfortable enough to go ahead with a job like that. Even though its expensive, I would feel better paying a mechanic to have it done right.

Is that where a bunch of guys stand around and get drunk while working on a car and screw up more than they fix? :)

Hey I dont let your friends drive your car. I learned my lesson my balance shaft belt actually did snap due to a friend misshifting.
