OK, here is the deal.... I recently got my car from Nebraska, so it has some rust to it. I was working on installing my front suspension, and ran into a problem with the stabalizer link that goes from the fork that hold the shock to the sway bar. It is a 14mm nut, as most of you know. I remember on my gst....i would place a allen wrench into the bolt part of it, and that would hold it in place while i removed the nut. Since the car is a little rusty, that bolt would not really accomidate the proper size allen wrench..... which i managed to strip the inside of.

Now when i turn the nut, the entire thing just spins...so I am not able to take the nut off. I have tried pulling the stabalizer link toward the control arm, hoping that the bolt would not spin with the nut. I also tried lowering the car on the opposite side, so that there would be more pressure on the sway bar, but still not help.

Has anyone messed up this before, and if so...how did you manage to take the nut off.

Here is a pic....in case some of yall don't know exactly what i'm talking about. It is the nut circled in green on the front of the fork.

Yes i just replaced my blow front left shock, had the same problem,i ended up just like.. hacking the mother ####er off, and i used a normal bolt/nut when i put it back, works great... try just hammering it till the threads are loose, or maybe u can use some kind of clamps to keep the bolt from spinning.. i duno.. my experience was, it was harder to get it back on and thread , then off.

so you just cut the nut off? i think my problem is a little tougher...coz the inside of the bolt...where the allen wrench is supposed to fit is stripped. So even if i just cut the nut off, it would be a pain to put back on like you experienced.

I got an idea...just to cut the whole bolt... on both ends of the stabalizer link. BUT of course I won't do that till i find out a price for new one.

Anybody else got any ideas? I tried putting a vise grip on the other end, but those didn't hold to good, since it is round.

IS there someone with a '99 that can verify something for me?

On another board I am being told, that there is supposed to be a 14mm on the back of the fork before the rubber boot. I looked in my chiltons...and it shows that this is how they are taking it off. When I look at mine, it has a round thing on the back side. MY '99 gst....was the exact same way....which is why i used an allen wrench.

IS this something that mitsubishi changed on the 99's?

my '98 talon is the same as yours. Just a tip rust eater is your friend :). always soak in a penatrating oil then dry off with a rag. This will let you fit the proper size tool and not strip it.

I would just hit up a junkyard and get the whole piece then hack off the old one. or drill and tap the inside and use a bolt?

is that what it is called? just a tip rust eater? i used some pb blaster on it, but that didn't really help any.

rust eater will actually brake up the rust and you can wipe the loose stuff off the nut or bolt. it is also a penetrating oil which will help loosen the bolt. you need to let it sit on their for at least an hour if its really rusted. make sure you dry it before you put a wrench on their or the oil will cause it to slip. I not sure about PB blaster i've just always used "Rust Eater" its cheaper anyway :).
