It's mostly personal preference, they both build great tranny's. I don't see the point in spending money if you don't have to though. Shep's tranny's are obviously proven, if it's cheaper then what are you waiting for?

Alright I am stumped. Sheps stg 4 tranny is supposed to be mid 8 sec 1/4 mile proven. Why is it almost $1000 less than TRE's Race tranny?

Your comparing Shep's stage 4 race REBUILD to TRE's brand NEW race trans. TRE's race rebuild is 2300 and Shep's brand new race trans is 3100. Things look alittle more even now don't they?

I have a TRE and I couldn't be happier. They are excellent to deal with, and the tranmission has performed flawlessly for the last couple of months.

A couple of my friends have basic rebuild TRE's with over 25k miles of 9000rpm 400 and 500 horsepower HELL on them and they still shift smooth as butter!

Both shops seem to have a great product. I have had the TRE transmission rebuild in for about 10,000 miles. Everything works great, and the shifts are amazing. I chose them because they go into a little more detail about exactly what they do and I liked the "round trip shipping" option. I opted to get the taller 1st gear, which Shep did not offer at the time. The rebuild was a little over $1000, but I also had a cracked diff housing so that set me back a little bit more.

I highly recommend getting the bearing bushings for the end of the shifter cables at the tranny and the solid mounts for the shift plate. A world of difference.

My Shep tranny has about 10-12K on it and it works great. Not one problem and Shep kept me updated on any and everything the entire time. I love my tranny and woulnd't go anywhere else for one.

I too have had a Shep tranny now for over 2 years, back then I bought it with all the options so it would be considered a stage 4 now.... I have over 200 track passes of 125+mph and I shift @ 9K rpms in first and 8500rpms in the rest of the gears... Its still shifting like its brand new like butter... To this day I consider this and my 35R to be my best mods Ive ever put on my car...

Guys, You have to realize we ship out on the average 10-15 trannies a week. The percentage of problems is less then 1 in a 100. We try our best, we are human and things happen but running to the message board before we can verify or even explain why a problem happened is not the best way to do it and only causes furthur frustration. I have always been very fair and honest with any problems that may arise.

For instance a guy with a fresh trans that has a new 1st gear has an issue with something on his car that we have no control of and the trans does not go into 1st gear all the way and rips the engagement teeth off of a new gear. It is obviously not out fault. We ask that before jumping to conclusions you must consider the countless number of things that we cannot control.

thanks for your time

Shep

btw if anyone was wondering about the race car it has had some major revisions and will be out before the end of the month with a fresh yellow paint job as well... kidding , same black cherry I fell in love with when the cars were first new.

I have a Shep Stg4 in a 2g AWD with a 3065 and built motor 9000rpm shifts holeshots you name it it takes it like a champ. turnaround was fast to like a week and it was at my door. only problem i have had is i broke the rear end like a month ago with a 5000rpm launch.

I've had the exact opposite experience. Also in a 2g AWD, however, have had problems with 2nd gear since install and have been following John's instructions to the T. Last Saturday, 2nd stopped meshing. The fork would go over the synchros, but not over the gear itself.

Put maybe 1200 miles on the tranny (including the 500 mi break in) and have had the trans in the car for less than a month. Let's hope John warranty's it.

Things happen. Between Shep and TRE Shep has the better reputation in my area simply because more people go through him. Both are good products and both will have their occasional problems. I am sure things will be properly handled.

Shep will take care of you! From my experience his customer service is second to none!

I have a stage one build from Shepherd and its one of my best investments I have made in my rebuild. Shipped it off to him once he recieved it he took it apart and look over it and than called me at worked and discussed with me about the things he seen and suggested I should do and what may happen if I didnt. The next day he phoned back letting me know its ready to be shipped. Had the tranny in the car since Christmas and it shifts like butter with no problems.

John,

Will the car be running at Nopi in Rockingham coming up in the next few weekends?

I have run a TRE box with a KAAZ lsd in my old 1g talon rally car and now my VR4 rally car... The box has worked good for the most part and every issue I had was caused by the punishment it gets... I have yet to hurt any gears, but have went through some input shafts and have put som wear on the center diff... I am happy with TRE's work, but I am not happy with the crappy ratios and final drives... Hopefully I can get an old ralliart dogbox soon....

My TRE experience...
- It took me two months to receive my order. I was told everything was in stock when I ordered (later found out this was not true).
- My transmission was lost and shipped to the wrong address. Once returned to TRE, it sat in the shop for at least a week until someone got around to sending it to me. At this point Jon's attitude became less than professional when I kept calling and asking where my transmission was and why it still had not been sent out.
- Impossible to get a hold of, emails hardly ever returned, even harder to get on the phone...
- Once installed, the transmission immediately started leaking from the input shaft seal.

Just as a follow up, turns out my rare earth magnet disconnected and wound its way between the fork and 2nd gear. Shep warrantied it, and took care of the shipping costs as well. Tranny is back on and is shifting like butter. Definately love this thing,

Glad you had everything fixed up!
It's experiences like that that make me want to take my business to shep when I finally have enough for a tranny rebuild.

Mine currently goes "thwack!" whenever I give it some gas, but otherwise drives fine. :shrugs:

Shep is the man, just saw his car run at NOPI in NY today.

He ran an 8.08@180mph on boost alone =0.

hes a good guy, does it all, and is a very nice person. Definatly what I like to see in a business owner, so hes definatly getting my tranny sometime in the future when needed.

Good to see John is finally back into the season. I heard he was having some fuel difficulties with the car and thus his late arrival into the season. But that could be just hearsay.

Question for you did SHEP also pay to have the tranny removed and reinstalled into your car after the tranny started to have problems. Just curoius because it's not cheap to have done or did you install it yourself?

 I just bought the Performance Rebuild minus the bead blasting, plus the $175 Phantom LSD insert, and a new 4th gear (mine was crackedWTF ) for $1158. Shipping and turn around time was good, about as fast as the mail and UPS run. I dont know how you had to wait 2 months for everything when I only had about a week and a half total time dealing with TRE. I spoke with Jon on the phone for about 15 min. one day and I am glad I made my purchase from them.:thumb: After the mechanic finishes installing I will leave updates and update my profile. (in summer school, no garage and tools in dorm rooms)
