I was wondering if diesel turbos were the same as all the other turbos? and what size they are?
thanks

my father's Ford F-350 XLT Turbo Diesel has a garret turbo charger on it... not sure what size

I do believe they are normal turbo's. I dont think they need any special modifying. But they usually always run at real low boost levels.

yeah i drove the F350 XLT, you can somewhat hear the tubo spooling, but there is no intercooler, no blow off valve, and there is no wastegate on or near the turbo... must be something like 6psi, if not lower... just there to speed the air up... same effect as "the tornado" :p

I know the turbo on the CAT 966 loader I operate at work was replaced with a Garrett I forget the # but has a /a10 on it looks about the same size as a normal tdo6 but has a 4'' inlet outlet and the mechanic came to turn it up for me and has the boost at 38psi.. Our dozer had a T-66 till it disapeared one day.
My buddy tryed to run a big Switzer turbo from a Mack tandom dump truck but that thing was lagged out we couldnt get more than 15 psi out of it due to the lag, but then again we made it work on a Ford Tempo too.

a ford tempo!? oh, that's rich!
ok, so i was planning to toss the 14b in my tempo/topaz once i got a 16g... until i got rid of the thing... OMG

Er, no. Diesel turbos tend to have different geometries, and serious diesels run enormous boost; 30-50psi is quite common.
Yes, and on top of their compression ratios, what, 30:1 and the like? Woof.

Diesel turbo's are engineering for a TOTALLY different engine called...a DIESEL engine. The turbo will not work very well on a high rpm gasoline motor. I do know of someone who took a large deisel application turbo and put it on a big block Ford that only rev'd to like 4k rpm and worked "okay" as that's not too far off a diesel.

The VE, and RPM range for a diesel engine are very different from a gasoline engine.

As for diesel engines, yes they can and do benefit from an intercooler, they do run crazy amounts of boost (30-50psi is nothing) and they make very good power. Compression ratio is more like 18:1 not 30:1 ;) They are nothing more than a big furnace and work the opposite of a gas engine. The more fuel you give a diesel the hotter it burns, where a gas engine does the opposite. They also have no throttle plate or ignition. Engine speed, and whether it runs or not is determined soley by the fuel system. When you turn the key off in a diesel, it shuts down the fuel flow, or it would keep running.

Just to clarify, if people were asking if diesel turbos are different in some physical way:

As long as the turbo has appropriate turbine ratios, and is of appropriate size, the general construction of a turbo is the same whether it be for diesel engines or gasoline engines. You would recognize a turbo from a diesel engine, they have the same parts. They just have way different A/R ratio and size requirements:

The difference is a 2.0 L diesel engine will have a different turbo requirement than a 2.0 L gasoline engine. They both need their turbos to accomplish different tasks (be efficient at lower pressures for the gasoline ones, etc).

also some disel turbos are only oil cooled. the one on my 6.5L chevy is just oil cooled. I believe Its an "IHI" turbo built for GM.
