Hi.
I was wondering if I can take of the balanceshaft belt and not reconnect it and just let it be like that or will this harm the engine?

The reason I ask is that I was changing the timing belt and the balanceshaft belt. But now I can't get the new balanceshaft belt on.

can I leave it off?
Thanks!

Hope it helps, its the pic of the engine after the balanceshaft removal kit was installed, got it from vfaq.com

You have TWO balance shafts. the one twards the front of the car is belt driven. the one twards the fire wall is on the other end of your oil pump sprocket. if you leave off the belt your engine will vibrate like a weed eater.

ok it will vibrate a whole lot!
but will it accualy do any harm.
I guess I can just go to a autoshop and ask them to change it and check that my timing is right as well.
first time I change the timing belt.OMG
soo I guess I have to let someone look at it anyway.
I cant get the damn crank sprocket off. thats the problem!

Thanks a lot guys!

I can't get the bolt off.
I have a 1991 6bolt engine.
and the cranksprocket is stuck!
I tried EVERYTHING!
it won't move.
therefor I can't put the new balance belt on!

Is the engine out of the car? try using an impact on it and the speed should pop it right off...if its out of the car you can wedge something between the block and crank to stop the crank from turning...although i dont recommend that :)

A tad off topic, I am also removing my balance shafts. I am going to cut the shaft off on the one that goes through the oil pump. On the other one I am going to block off does anyone know where I can get a freeze plug that will fit that hole?

WHAT THE #### are y'all talkin about?? #1....don't drive around w/ no balance shaft belt, you're asking for trouble. #2, if you're removing the b-shafts w/ the motor out of the car, take em both out and get the proper stubby shaft and the blockoff bearings....#3 if you're doing all of this with the motor in the car, leave the front balance shaft in, it's a pain in the ass to take out in the car. remove the front case, it'll slide out with the rear b-shaft attached, spend 7 bucks on the stupid stubby shaft and install it to eliminate that rear b-shaft. the rear requires no blockoff bearing, the oiling holes are built into the shaft....this type of removal will cost you next to nothing, the front shaft will stay in place and not move ever again!! It will automatically block off the internal bearings, which would normally be replaced using method #2. you'll need a front case cover gasket and an oil pan gasket too. thank you drive thru

The thing is that I'm not removing no shafts at all.
I just wanted to know if I could leave the b-belt off!
the rear b-shaft is still there and the front one to it's just not connected.
will this be no good?

No way! Get that bolt off using the method AWDkitkat said. It should work fine. Just tap the starter really briefly with a breaker bar up against the frame. AND DON'T DO THIS WITHOUT A TIMING BELT. Bent valves suck ;-(

remove both shafts if you do this, otherwise your car will be extra out of whack...

you can chop the gear part off of the lower ballance shaft and reinstall the gear so its home made.... get a cam bearing installer, take the upper ballance bearings out and turn em over, reinstall with the hole plugged... take the deal out. put a flat circle in the hole where the ballanceshaft used to be and jb weld around it so it wont leak oil into the timing case.... voila, pretty much done.. bUT read VFAQ or be sorry.
