hey guys, I have a 99 gst, no ABS. i know the stock tranny cooler is in the radiator (or in front) and there are 2 lines, in and out. which one is which? top one or bottom one? i need to know which in the IN and which is OUT.

thanks in advance!

You know, I've never thought about that. I would think it could go either way. More important though is flushing out the cooler. These tend to stop up and the transmission overheats and you lose a trans. Flush it.

Good Luck

hey, thanks for replying!:thumb:

i'm installing a tranny cooler...should i connect this in series, or should i not use the stock one and just hook this up in its place (instead of the stock) ?

Hook this one up in place of the stock one. I am about to do the same as you when I do my fmic install. What size lines are you gonna use and where did you get them? How do you plan on mounting the cooler?

got the cooler from IPT. i just took what John recommended. i plan on mounting it sometime this week, up where the smic used to be. another guy told me to also use this in place of the stock one.

it came w/ some hoses and mounting brackets. it works via temperature of the fluid. so, in other words, it wont start cooling until the ATF reaches a certain degree...it has a "bypass" on it. plus it has 2 connects, and either can be in or out soo......im good!:)

You can use them together. As long as you flush the one in the radiator. Like I said, these have a tendency to stop up.

Good Luck

Here is what my Trans cooler looked like after mounting in the SMIC location at IPT's shop. John ran the lines from the trans to the cooler so Im 100% sure if input and output even matter. John was also happy to find that no drilling was needed to mount the brackets, we used stock bolt holes in the frame. I was also able to modify the SMIC ducting to direct air to the cooler. I do know it works wonders on the trans temps compared to the cooler in the bottom of the Rad.

thanks for the pic, brad! that helps alot with my tranny cooler install. i like how you used the duct, too bad i trashed mine when installing my fmic.

old mitsu tech, i think i am going to just use this cooler. i will unhook the stock cooler, and just leave it there....thanks for your wise info too!

How can the stock tranny cooler be in the radiator? The only lines going to my radiator are upper and lower coolant hoses, nothing else. I believe maybe the tranny cooler is in the radiator on 1g's but definitely not on 2g's.

There are different cooler locations among the 2G years. I have a 97 GSX, my tranny cooler is in the driver's side air duct. I'm hoping I won't have to relocate it when I put in the FMIC.

My cooler appears to be in my driver side air duct. But I saw JuddsGSX has the same looking thing on the driver side air duct, and he's M/T. Weird?

Looks like I'm going to have to relocate the tranny cooler.

Geezus_Aach: Which cooler did John at IPT recommed to you?

Thanks.

EDIT: Nevermind, quick search got me the answer, sorry.

I got my lines at autozone I cut a piece off of my existing lines and brought it up to Autozone and said "I need 2 feet of this" and it all bolts up fine its just your typical water/heater type hose. I believe the size is 3/8s its been a while since i did that install so make sure you bring a stock hose in to be sure.

Oh and my stock cooler was mounted in front of my ac condenser and i have my B&M tranny cooler located where the smic used to be.
