A 50 trim is a turbo that is popular in the dsm community because the lag is acceptable and it makes good power. Go to almost any of the vendors that sell turbos for this site and you should find some variation of a 50 trim, from direct bolt on to t3/t4.

Start small. Follow the tuning guide found here:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/tuning-guide/2gturbo/

After you take a look around at all of the different parts, Try searching around and learning about your car. Here is a nice link for you to start out with the basic terms and questions/answers:

I remember it useto be 16g's, Now the ''50trim'' wave has hit the dsm community and the term ''50 trim'' is getting thrown around ALOT. I think you should research alittle first. You will need ALOT more mods then you have now, Before you think about upgrading your turbo.

Goodluck.

ooh ok...i mean ive looked at the turbo upgrades on this site and ive found things like the garrett t3/t4, the mitsu small 16G the big 16G, the 18G, the 20G, etc.....but which one is the 50 trim kit? or is there another name for it and im just missing it completely??

Is there a reason you're stuck on the ''50 trim'' ''kit'' ? By kit, What do you mean? My 50trim was direct bolt on, On one of my previous dsm's. All I needed was to block the water lines an buy oil feed and drain line.

You know you'll need at minimum"

Injectors
fuel pump
front mount intercooler
piping for ^
something to control the injectors with
a logger
dyno time? Or someone that actually knows how to tune the car.
etc etc etc......

I would upgrade the turbo last, This way you aren't like everyone else on here complaining how their big turbo is so laggy, And it's slower then it was when they had a t25 or 14b etc...

For ''50 trim'' turbos..

All the vendors sell them..

Slowboyracing.com is one example.

well i just dont understand the "50 trim" name....not necessarily the "50 trim kit"...im not sure wat its called but i thought a "50 trim" was like a specific kinda turbo or something...the name was wat was confusing me really but thanks for clearing it up :thumb:

TurboDreamz,

I'll let this picture do some of the talking, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. What you see below is a "50 trim" turbo next to a "13G" turbo. Basically, the larger the turbo the more air it can efficiently compress ie. (compress air without heating it as much or as fast) and the more HP it can help you make with supporting mods. The reason you hear/read "50 trim" this and "50 trim" that is because the price and availability of the so called 50 trim turbo has come down in the last few years making them more affordable to the average street tuner.

By the way, a 13g turbo was on all 1G automatic cars until 94, the 1g 5 speed cars came with a 14b turbo that is just a little larger than the 13g. All 2g cars 95 thru 99 came with a T-25 turbo that is about the same size as a 13g. Look at the pic again and you will see why so many people want to say they have a "50 Trim". For some people it's all about the size of their turbo.. LOL

to answer your question, a 50 trim "kit" is probably just a t3/t4 variant "50 trim" turbo with the necessary accessories/hardware to install it onto your car. that probably includes oil feed/drain lines, turbo bolts, gaskets, etc. that will make the 50 trim bolt onto your existing manifold / o2.

as per 1993ecliplseGS' insistance (which I totally agree), DO NOT go straight to an upgraded turbo if you are stock. work on all the small things in the stage 1 mods, then go to the bigger things. This way you will get the most out of the 50 trim when you are ready for it. If you just slap a 50 trim on your car, it WILL NOT go any faster than a stock turbo car with supporting mods. take your time and learn about our cars before jumping ship to the "50 trim" fad.

trust me. I'm there right now.

FYI - In case you haven't figured this yet the sizes pretty much go like this
13g
14b
16g (sm16 first then 16g - but not a huge diff)
18g (not used all that much)
20g
50trim (many variations of 50 trim available)

Like mentioned to go from a 13g to a 50 trim would really require alot of other mods to support the 50 trim.

Some people go for the juggler all at once. Some work their way up one step at a time.

A good first step turbo (IMHO) is the 16g (sm or reg) You can upgrade to that with minimum mods and still see a noticable difference in performance.

Then you can add further mods and still get more out of the 16g.

I have a sm16g and am now putting down 290 whp and I could still get more out of this thing with a little more work.

Oh Ya - welcome to the DSM world. You will probably live to regret it. (J/K)

Another example too would be:

Right now i am running a T04E T3/T4 setup, this is also known as a "50 trim" turbo.

wow u guys have been really helpful....i completely understand the whole concept now and i thank all of u for your help!:D
