I just bought a 98 GSX and it needed a rebuild. I have about 5 grand to spend on her. She is in the shop now. The estimated rebuild cost will take 4 of the 5 grand. However, the car already has a downpipe, intercooler pipe work, full 3" exhaust, bov and cold air intake. The extra grand I have left over I am getting the head ported and a better clutch. My question is, what kind of horsepower should I expect to have with the mods and the porting? Also is there any recommedations of some relatively cheap upgrades I can get done while the engine is taken apart? Time is of the essence, Thanks.:thumb:

4 is a little high for a rebuild, what kind of parts did you get for the inside?

You should remove the balance shafts if the engine is being rebuilt.

You will not notice a big increase in horsepower unless you get a fuel pump and a manual boost controller and raise your boost a little.

Give us some of your goals, and we will tell you what else you need.

Buy or rebuild a 6 bolt, you can get a rebuilt 6 bolt longblock for 1500 or so. Then get a larger turbo and finish the supporting mods for it if you still have the t25 on there, especially before you spend money on porting the head. Go to the tech guide at the top and read the upgrade path that should help you.

Well, they are charging $1,500 for the removal and install, 11 for the machining and 9 for the internals. They are removing the balance shaft. A 6 bolt is out of the question as I am in Italy right now and I am returning to the States in Feb, and dont have the time or money to do it. Although I do know the benefits. But they are giving me a warranty, so I cant beat it. As for my goals, well I am not going to be taking it to the track. I just want a nice, sexy sports car...(hince the GSX), that can embarrase the hell out of the punk ricer in front of his girlfriend, (and stock dsm's). I like to drive fast, but I wont be WOT all the time. I would like around 300whp. Do you guys think I am close with what I have?

Youre going to have to get a different turbo the t25 wont get you anywhere around there.

Any suggestions? Something reliable and low maintenance. Also not too expensive. I sound like a cheap-ass but I paid 9 for the car and 5 for the fix, ouch!

Go with the EVO III 16G, it's capable of getting to 300hp with the right supporting mods. Check out my car's profile, I would guess I would be putting down about 275-300AWHP if I threw some race gas in, and still be very streetable. The T-28 is also another option but I am a fan of the EVO III 16G.

If you look around you might find someone who will do the rebuild for significantly less. Make sure to have a warranty though incase it crankwalks. A big t28 or 16g would be a good choice for that power range or even a 14b since you can pick one up in decent shape for under $200.

Sounds like I need to look into a new turbo, thanks guys. The car is already in the shop and the motor is out, so taking it some where else is a little too late. Any other mods besides turbo mods, keep in mind the engine is totally apart right now, nothing too expensive maybe 2-3 hundred max!

14b @ 15psi will give you more power than anything you can do internally to the engine. Just get rid of the t25

Thanks alot, I will definitly let you know how it turned out. What I am going to do is drive the car first. I talked with the Tech and he said that it isnt too hard to change out a turbo, if I wanted to do it myself. So I will wait, if I am happy with it then fine, if not then....out comes the turbo! Thankx guys, I appreciate the help.

#1 Get a good 6bolt (take balance shafts out)(Get everything needed for a swap)SBR has it.
#2 If you are looking for alot of power, get rods/pistons installed, or get a prebuilt motor from SBR and somthing.
#3 MBC, ARPs, Mitsu metal head gasket, all timing Acc.(waterpump) and Prothane bushings.
If it was me I would get all new lines SS and all that extra stuff while you have the motor out.
#4 Shep TRANS, get a new clutch, flywheel if you looking to pwn highway, if you goin for off the line i would stick with stock.
#5 Turbo, you choice, get all gauges needed
#6 Dsm link
#7Fuel, pump, afpr, injectors, Eprom ecu chip it(injec comp/studder box exex.), and get injectors to match your turbo.
#8 Fmic, piping, GMMAS(if you want), BOV
#9 work on head as you are doing, Cams/ exex whatever floats your boat.
Basicly do everything you can while you have the motor out.
