i have a 91' talon fwd turbo which i bought used ofcourse and the previous owners have left me mysteries on WTF they changed or f*ed with. Neways. My car which is 5spd manual when in neutral will rev up to lets say 7000rpm or so... probably further i dont like reving that high... but when im in a anygear the max rpm it will go is 5.500 once its warmed up. Its like a cut in the engine and jerks the car abunch. I dunno if its a fuel cut, lack of air, safety system to keep my engine safe, or what? its really annoying. and my stock boost gauge... which i've heard is the engines estimate of boost level reads 14psi- which is pegged. which i can reach in any gear except 5th cuz i got a ticket the day i got my car so i cant really test that yet. Im thinking the gauge is probably off alot and the only mods i can tell that have been done is a chrome oil cap "20hp no doubt", and a k&n filter w/ no air can. im pretty sure they took some sort of sensor out of it because there was a harness just laying on my tranny that flopped around, so i ziptied it to a safe place. the harness is just a thin black wire that makes a loop. any thoughts?!

-thanks
Rem -91' turbo talon fwd

Well the harness is most likely a ground wire, and if its the one Im thinking of it should be bolted down by the started bolt nearest the radiator. Just undo the one starter bolt and slip the end of the wire o-ring over the bolt and then bolt it back up to the bell housing and your set....

The engine cut could be many things. Id try replacing basic aintenance items first then going from there. Good luck

If you are pegging the stock boost gauge I would say something was done to the stock boost control system and you are hitting fuel cut. The best fix, until you get a boost gauge and MBC or whatever is to just run a line right from the nipple on the turbo outlet elbow right to the wastegate actuator. It will lower you boost but at least you will know it's not too high.

I bet that harness you are referring to is the boost control solenoid. If there is a manual boost controller installed, the BCS is not necessary on a 1st gen. Secure it somewhere, but don't ground it.

When you first start your car up you should not be revin it so high up, at least let it warm up before you do that!!!!!

i know :thumb: i dont. this is once its warmed up it cuts at 5,500. i also know to let it cool down to once im done driving it, and to do oil changed atmost every 3000miles and to run 93 octane! sure i've done it once but i live in texas man, in the summer the whole engines already at 100+degrees not to mention that black cars create an oven affect.
my valves knock, or something does alot during warmup idle, which i know is common w/ dsm's but i doubt its a timing issue. the person i bought it from told me he had alot of friends with dsm's that had run 20g turbos on the car so im betting one of those punks played with my electronics but what did they do i want to know.

and for the record, i have never reved my car up 7000 but once to see if the 5500 was a govenor and this was after a nice warm up while in summer, and sure enough she did it fine

Hey road, if your car runs good otherwise I would definatly lean towards some fuel cut going on which is really no big deal. Just check to see whats up with the bcs, if its not there or broken/unplugged then just go get a MBC and youll be fine. Mine has been removed from the car for a looong time, its ok as long as you have something in its place, cause theres a bunch of vacuum lines you need to eliminate with them.

i took some pics to see if this will help ya'll help me. I know the air filter is ghetto right now, and im fixin that this week. stupid ppl before me didn't put the air filter on with all the right parts so i had to ghetto rig it.

Jesus. That "strange loop" is your boost controller not hooked up. You should hook that up right before your turbo explodes.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR UNTIL YOU FIX THAT.

BUY A FU@KING MANUAL AND USE IT.

Did I not call this a couple posts up?

If only you bastards would actually fu@king listen to me. Ever wonder why I am so bitter and angry? It's because I give the right answer and nobody listens.

Here is a diagram on how to hook your BCS back up, I made it special for you to prove I really do care about the people on this site:

dang man dont get so mad. I just got this car a month ago chill out. I didn't not believe you, its just i dont know how to undo things i haven't done, and i've never owned a dsm before... thanx for the diagram though im gonna tackle that in a few min. dang though that means my car wont be so speedy but atleast its safe now

dont worry about batman... sometimes he gets sand in his vagina.... LOL jk batman, i repect your knowledge, you just get angry from time to time

Roadtalon, in case all the hating in this thread earlier hasn't made the point, you really *really* want to get your boost control plumbing sorted out super-double-quick-like.

Unfortunately, none of your photos showed the plumbing down around the wastegate solenoid, so it's not clear where that loop on top of the turbo outlet is going. If it just goes directly down to the solenoid, you're probably OK with regards to boost since it *should* be opening your wastegate early.

Try to find yourself another DSMer locally (or a local club, better still) and get someone that knows the engine bay to come take a look. I'd also be worried about the loose vacuum line that you can see behind the intake manifold in your last picture; it should be connected somewhere.

And... you have a 4-port throttle body in a 91. I think that's odd, but I'm not certain. Your car may have had an engine swap at some point.

We'll the BATMAN was right.... i went to oreillys today and got all my shiznit in order. I got a new T joint and some piping, I set up the bcs to the mas and to the wastegate and turbo intake outlet. my friend let em burrow his book on the car, and i checked out what it said... not much but my setup looks like the book one now. The car does run differently. I noticed a handling difference, its like the computer restricts my steering and makes it stiffer, its kinda nice...(maybe just in my head) oddly enough it does still have a fuel cut.... only this time its past 6000rpm : ) The boost gauge still hops up to 12-14psi in a hurry. The rpms drop a lot quicker now. The car feels more solid like its working better. I pull off second gear scratches w/ ease. I shifted as fast i did w/ and w/o it and w/o it would only do a second scratch if i didn't let off the gas. (scratch as in, switching 1st-2nd using clutch and dumping and getting on gas real quick...spinning tires) i figure some of ya'll might be like WTF is that since my friends dad w/ an m3 was like gear scratch and thought i ment grinding. Well tomorrow my K&N airfilter comes in : ) i came with a beat up one thats seen rubbage w/o being mounted properly so tomorrow i pick up the new one which will probably fit propery unlike the one that it came with.

Thanks ya'll for helping me, hopefully i can get the rest of my car checked out by someone other then a dealership - there retards down here - Thanks especially to batman. and
Drziplok check on that throttle body cuz i have no idea whats supposed to be there. -and i will check that vacuum line. w/ hope ill get new ngk plugs next week
thanks again

You're really lucky fuel cut is programmed in, or you would have no more car. It's likely there's some damage to either the turbo or the motor either way though. I'd get that thing checked out...

batman its obvious you know to much about this car... good thing for me and others, but it means its time for you to move onto another car. Try learning everything about something else like a kia, i've never seen a pimped out kia. BTW i got my new K&N on before the 220 mile journey going from austin to dallas, this is of course after i got my bcs connected. I haven't had to much time to see all the new characteristics, but i likes. the boost levels still seem high just no cut. next mod will definately be a pod w/ air to fuel ratio gauge and boost gauge im curious about whats goin on. i got 31+mpg on my way but thats 5hrs of driving cuz of stupid traffic. i think thats damn good for having the car loaded up 700lbs- 2ppl + cargo. for a 91' street beast w/ 130,000miles on it. I think my cruise control isn't working right, either that or its above me i played w/ it for 5min and then i got stuck in traffic again so i dunno whats w/ that, no big deal though.

a happy dsm owner

How about a Starion or a '69 Firebird? Porsche 356? Don't underestimate the Bat.
