Hey guys,

My car just got broken into, and the f*&%ers busted my door lock up. Does anyone know how much it would cost to fix a door lock, and is this a DIY job or do I have to go to a professional? Thanks in advance for the help. P.S. I am still very pissed about the incident.

You could do it yourself, but that job is a pain in the ass. Only cost me $30 to get all the locks changed / replaced on my NT with power.

Where did you get the locks destruck?

Where do you guys think I should get it done in terms of pricing and quality? Locksmith, dealer, or body shop? I'm so broke, and now they stole my stereo, cd changer, and all my tools. These are the pics of what they did to my car. Check out my gallery to see the "before" pics. Damn Thieves!!!

my car was broken into a couple of weeks ago...in my driveway...and about 10ft from where i was watching tv...not to commend them...but they did a really clean job and didn't damage anything.

do you not have comprehensive coverage on your insurance?

No, I don't have full coverage. I only have liability. That's why I have to find the cheapest way to fix everything. Plus, I'm going to change my insurance policy to full coverage.

For the locks I'd have to say dealer. Bodyshop is well and good, but from the dealer if anything happens like you lose all your keys, all you have to do is walk in with the title, key number, and some ID and they'll look up your key, and make it for you.

Not that it does a bloody thing if you have a car alarm on your car like I do, and lose your remote with your keys while the car is armed...

That takes some balls. I got a pager system in my car with shock sensor and dual zone microwave sensor. $110 and it was an easy install. Now I'm instantly alerted if anyone gets too close to the car :)

Where you whowed them just what you had to steal.
You're suh-suh-slippin', there, chief. ;)

[It's been a very long week.]

Word of advice, shop around and find the best alarm you can afford. Also, when you step up to full coverage, set your collision deductible around $1000. (Hopefully) chances are that, if you're in an accident, it will be the other person's fault and they will be responsible. You only have to come up with the grand if you hit something while moving and it's your fault. Set your comprehensive deductible at $100 or less. You get broken into - it costs you $100. Hail storm - $100. Tree falls on the car - $100. See the picture?

Sorry to hear it. Just remember, the darkest corner of hell is reserved for thieves and cheating spouses. :sneaky:

Thanks for the advice guys. I used to have a Viper alarm with remote starter and everything, but I took it out because it would unlock itself after my turbo timer shuts off. Also, one time the car was on by itself without me pressing the remote.

You should hook that viper back up, I don't know why the remote start would have a problem on an automatic either.

You should try to get the pager type remote, and usually those come with the ability to turbo time itself.

You do not need full coverage. Just get "comprehensive" to cover theft, fire, acts of god, etc.

That said very very few insurance policies cover "contents" and "aftermarket parts". That would mean that radios, loggers, etc would not be covered.

The real problem IMO is the legal system that hands out slaps on the wrist to people who vandalize and steal cars. You'd think in a society like ours with its automobile based economy there'd be tougher laws to protect its owners but sadly this isn't the case. We invest so much time and money in our cars with the initial cost, gas, repairs, upkeep, insuranse, etc. and given the fact that for most of us it is the ONLY way to get to our jobs or anywhere for that matter you'd think there'd be tougher laws to help gaurd us against these low-lifes. When are we going to get laws that say to the criminal element 'if you put your dirty little hands on someone else's car you will get them cut off', metaphorically speaking. WTF

Touching on what crankbender said those companies that do not cover aftermarket parts will sometimes replace the value of the original part.

For example if the stock wheels were worth $50 a piece, and you had some Volk TE-37s on for $400 or so a piece that got stolen, they'd pay you for stocks, IF anything at all.

Check with your insurance company about everything, and I was talking with my insurance agent at State Farm about drag racing at the track if it would void my coverage or anything. She said nothing would be covered at all if something happened at the track, and that in most cases new clients are turned down if they even mention racing.

I work for Mercury Insurance and I'm the one that everyone calls if they get into an accident or if car or anything in the car gets stolen. Well you do need Comprehensive as one of the coverages to get that kind of stuff covered. It depends on the insurance company but some places sell comp and collision only together, others will sell just the comprehensive but you have to tell them. Mercury sells them separate but they wont tell you this. And you never know that stuff could of been covered it all mainly depends on what the adjuster wants to do. The adjuster's are the ones that make the final desicion on that. The insurance company that I have more car is Progressive and I know that they will cover all my mods if any of them get stolen, I asked them.

i feel your pain man, a couple months ago someone slashed my top to try and break in my car but they couldn't get in, needless to say when I went out to my car the next morning and seen a 12 inch cut in my top I was not to pleased :nono:

1. Don't leave anything worth stealing even slightly in sight. Alarms and door locks don't matter. You'll just be left with a beeping, flashing car with broken windows. Most people who do this do it often, and will be gone before you react to your alarm.

2. Got an aftermarket stereo? Make sure you have a detachable faceplate (NOT a hideaway). Thieves read the same ads that convinced you to get a system with a so-called "invisible" faceplate. Take it with you when you leave the car, even for a few seconds. A seasoned theif only needs about 15 seconds to get your head unit. Don't put the faceplate in the glovebox. It's the first place they'll look.

i had the same setup on my spyder as well after i did my whole system setup, though it was 250 for me, but well worth it.

i kept it on "silent alarm" mode most the time, i want the theives to think theyre getting into a car without a alarm, so i can come around the side of the yard with a long blunt object and take care of them the old fashioned way.
