I have a auto 99 GSX and was wondering what FMIC all you auto guys are running and if you had to relocate the tranny cooler or not. I would rather keep the tranny cooler in its stock loaction (I have 2 of them, aftermarket one right beside stock one) if at all possible. Please let me know what you guys did. Thanks!

On my buddy Steve's car (member of this board) we installed the massive SBR setup and were able to retain the tranny cooler. The only thing was we had to slightly bend the tranny dipstick, but no worries. He drives a 99 auto gst. :thumb:

why did you have to bend the dip stick?

because the SBR setup is a true short route, so the upper pipe goes right through part of the space that the dipstick occupies. So we just bent it off to the side slightly and havent had any issues since.

Will the cooler receive enough air flow to cool down the tranny fluid after installing the fmic? I'm also trying to figure out what I should do about it. I have a JRC core sitting under my bed until I decide what to do about the tranny cooler.

All of you, with 2g A/Ts that is, who have installed a fmic and left the tranny fluid cooler in it's stock location, have you experienced any negative side effects?

I think its all dependent upon how hard you driving the car, the temperature outside, and the core being used. I run the JRC core on my car and think you would be fine with it on your A/T. I have a M/T and love my JRC. If you have the 8" you should be set.

If you are super concerned or others post some serious issues with their tranny coolers and fmic combos, look into getting an aftermarket cooler and/or lines and rerouting it to the old SMIC location since that will be gone and there will be space there. Just an idea.

I'll try and get Steve to post soon on his thoughts :thumb:

First up is your guys's tranny coolers located on the driver side? Some makes and different years came on different locations. I know my stock tranny cooler was located behind my fmic against the ac condenser. I just recently ripped the stock one out and put a huge trans cooler where my SMIC used to be. Also you will need to relocated the overflow bottle or get a different one. A slim fan isnt 100% necessary but makes install a lot easier. I guess the best way to show you is obviously pics. Ill see what I can do.

i just bought a front mount....and bought a bunch of madral bends and made my own...left the tranney cooler in its stock place..

also had to bend the tranney dip stick for the short rout kit...

I have a J Racer 8" and moved my auto cooler to the drivers side since didn't want anymore restriction added in front of my radiator. The frontmount is already a big restriction as it is. I still have the A/C too and so far I haven't had any problems yet. I don't launch my car or anything so I just reuse the stock cooler. I'll upgrade someday when I do some tranny mods.

I removed my stock cooler from in front of the radiator and replaced it with a B&M SuperCooler and put it where the old SMIC was. I really don't see much point in running the tiny stock cooler in addition to an aftermarket one. It might help a little, but nothing significant. I highly recommend getting an upgraded tranny cooler for any modified A/T DSM-- even my aftermarket cooler gets VERY hot after driving.

I also had to bend my tranny dipstick some to fit the short-route piping (DVDT Fab street kit).

I was originally considering replacing the PS coil with an aftermarket finned unit and putting it in the driver's side wheel well, but ended up just moving the coil behind the center beam and zip-tieing it, which is what most people do.

Doug, what kind of materials did you use to relocate the cooler? Also, do you have to drain the trans fluid before relocating the cooler?

I just used some spare bracket strips I had laying around. And yes, you will have to drain it. If you want, I can try to take a picture of it. There's a good VFAQ at plymouthlaser.com on changing fluid if you need it.

Hahn Racecraft, check them out, fitment was amazing, easy to install, dont have to touch anything that has to do with the tranny, you can keep stock fogs, and fills up entire hole up front, looks mean as hell. Not a bad price either...Their customer service was awesome too

Are you talking about Hahn Racecraft? Did you really have to bring up a dead thread to ask for a website? You could have easily gone to Google and typed in "Hahn Racecraft" and gotten the site. Really now. You searched for a specific topic on here. You couldn't finish the job on a search engine? Stop asking to be hand fed.

I have a tranny cooler in the stock smic location with a spal fan on it with my fmic. If I were you and had the cash, I would put your tranny cooler somewhere else instead of between the fmic and the radiator. thats a lot of things for air to flow throught to reach your fans on your car.

Mabye try it with where they are, and if you have overheating problems, THEN move your tranny cooler. Hope this helps.

Can anybody post a pic of what they did with their dipstick tube?

Can anybody post a pic of what they did with their dipstick tube?

For my ETS short route kit, I just bent it a quarter inch until it was out of the way of the new piping. Its soft metal, not a big deal. The dipstick is flexible so a straight tube shouldn't make any difference.

Yea Im still debating on getting Supra SMIC or a Front Mount. Im trying to do the least amount of work possible. Would an Evo8 FMIC work with a 1995 Eclipse GST a/t?

Goals are:

16g turbo
3" exhaust
Gauges & tune

Aftermarket cooler and put it in the stock SMIC location or just make different lines and put the stock one there but an aftermarket would be better. If your really worried wire up a small fan on a switch and do a nice zip tie job and zip tie a fan to the front of the cooler so you know with out any doubts that it is getting a good air flow.

I have the Extreme Turbo Systems 7" FMIC kit on my 96 TSI fwd. I had to get rid of the power steering cooler and the tranny dipstick had to be bent slightly to make room for the piping. I can get some pics and post if you would like to see them. So far I really like this kit, would definatly recommend it to anyone.

You could use the core yes, but you would need to have someone custom bend pipes in order to make it fit and work. You would be better off looking for a kit designed for your car with the turbo you have or even upgrading to the Supra sidemount.
