Alright guys here's my question. I tried searching but with no luck. My friends and I are wondering why a turbo makes the sound it does. Is it because of the intake sucking in the large amounts of air or the air encountering a smaller opening and rushing past it? Sorry if this is "newbie" question but I'm just curious. Thanks.

well ima say it the turbine sucking up air, just like an Airplane before take off, when those turbine start spinning real quick, and the air starts being sucked in,it makes the spooling sound,i don't think its the intake because its really the turbo sucking in air,the filter is just taking out the dirt out of the air.and if you run the turbo without an intake,it gets really loud, but then again you get alot of dirty air in your engine.but i could be wrong about all this -Andy :dsm:

LOL cant tell if thats a smart ass remark or not. but yea i was always wondering about this too. also, if u take the air filter out of the car, would the car sound different?

Yes, the intake sounds would be louder and it would sound like you're ruining your engine

part of it has to do with the fact that there are frictioned parts (albeit lubricated by oil) that are spinning upwards of 18,000 rpm.

Add to that the over 300 cubic feet of air per minute in 2-3" diameter piping.

yes, it will sound like the car is a tad more throaty and you will hear the sound of the motor more. The effect is more noticeable on n/a cars usually but yea, the short answer is . . .yes.

Yea, yea I know that. I'm just trying to pinpoint why it makes that sound. I mean if the turbo was sealed you wouldn't be able to hear it unless it was leaking air? Thanks for the responces guys!

I think it would be the waste gate actuator, because the ones that are externally gated are quieter.

Well, wistle with your mouth and picture what is sounds like from inside your mouth. And you'll come up with a purpose pretty much close what your asking.

The sound is a combination of the moving blades and the air its forcing in.

Which sound? The vacuum-cleaner sound of the air rushing, or the turbine whine? The first is obvious, the second is the speed of the vanes and the air over them approaching the speed of sound.

It's more like 150,000 rpm! OMG

If it were the old days I could really have fun right now. :sigh:X10

A few of these guys are right. I hope you under stand this is the same as asking what makes noise from an oscilating fan?

The air around it or the blades of the fan.

The turbulent flux variations maintained within a set velocity stack, times temperature induced compression ratios, multiplied by baffle sub vertices (but not limited to bearing loads minus trajectory port modifications) will give you the aformentioned sound.

Or, a playing card clothes-pinned to the edge of the inducer, and sticking into the turbine blades.

Actually, I think the sound is created by the flux capacitor, but I need some back up on that?

Defiant?
that and its a combination of exhaust bearings :thumb:

If you were air that was being spun and sucked in that fast you would whine too!

Da whistle go woooooo!!!!!

hit the nail on the head.

Ok here's my serious answer now:

The noise is caused by a number of forces, but it basically stems from the "torturing" of the air passing through. Initially, the air is violently broken up and chopped into segments as it enters the inlet duct, passes through the inlet and encounters the compressor blades. Much of the sound thus created is in a wide range of frequencies, but a single frequency is also heard. This is the familiar "whine" caused by the compressor blades chopping up the air. This sound is called "discrete" beccause it has an identifiable frequency and can be recognized in relation to other sounds.

Hah that is exactly what I did. I kinda figured it was the same but people were telling me it was something else. Anyways, thanks for the replies guys, and thanks Defiant for a non-burning comment(I've gotten accustomed to his constant sarcastic remarks...but this is a nice change :D )
