hi i have the opportunity to buy a 88 rx7 turbo for 500 bucks. The only thing is that he lost the key LOL. It also has some sort of weird push button start thing on it. Ive seen it runing before, runs well no smoke or anything. What do you guys think should i buy it? How would i get a key made or would i need a new ignition? I believe the key is the same for the door and the ignition? Couldnt i have a locksmith come out and make a new one?

Yes the key is the same for the door and the ignition. Does he have a title for it? If so, it might be worth it.

well he does have the title technically? It was in his wifes uncles name blah? He died so its still in his name. They said they can get it it will just take a while. I understand it took me 3 months to get my title for my old talon that was stolen and fraduently sold to me with a fake title(long story).

get the vin # and call mazda see if they can make a key from that, not sure being an 88 if they can. anybody else know

Regardless of wether or not it has a title or a key, buy it. 500 is cheap for that kinda vehicle. They're pretty hard to come by, id jump on it if i were you :p

It is a nice car but the engine sucks for reliability. My friend has had to replace his apex seals every year, 2x this year in that stupid car. I think Mazda picked the worst material pos for the seal, there are a few companies out there that make better ones but they still dont hold up for very long when you crank up the boost.

Having a Wankel engine is one thing. Having a turbo or two hung on its side is an entirely different situation. This "difference" can be likened to the comparison of a shaving nick and being caught on the jaw by a helicopter blade. If you get it, within a month you won't even remember there was some problem with the keys being in uncle's pocket (now) and some fuss over paperwork.
Still, $500 is a cheap lesson.....

well 2 of my friends both have had fc turbo no engine problems to speak of. They are both heavily modified one even has bigger turbo pushing around 400hp or so(like 340whp). I think the whole unreliable rotary thing is just due to abuse and maybe when you mod the rx7 get all the fuel restriction and timing out of the way first? Im thinking of getting a microtech or haltech before i even get an exhaust since they are apparently very detonation happy once boost raises. Stock fc turbo ecu is really restricing, bye bye ecu here comes microtech heheh. I dont think i can remove the ignition tumbler, 2 bolts that either need to be broken off or cant be removed im not sure? Im thinking of just taking the door hand lock assembly off and going to a locksmith with that. The key for the ignition and door are the same correct?

If your friend is blowing through Apex seals every year... he is not doing something right when he replaces them. Or getting cheap ass ones.
I have seen numberous ones last for years that push 20+ PSI through thier wanky.

yea buy it its cheap for 500 just watch out for the engine they can get f####d quick. my cousin sold one for 500 but engine was about to blow

so does anyone know if that will work with the door lock, bringing it to a locksmith? Also the guy said its leaking oil. I looked at it and it seems to be right where the tranny, engine meet? I hope its just a bad oil pan gasket or something, not a new engine LOL.

There are ppl (locksmith) who will go to your house and make you a new key by taking apart the locking mechanism but most of them require you to have the title but you might be able to find someone who doesnt . or you can do what you said taking off the door lock and taking it to a locksmith .i know for sure they can make a new key from the locking mechanisms, taking it to them will proably be alot cheaper than them going to you :thumb:

very true. I wonder how hard it is to disassemble the door lock assembly?

If you think youve seen problems with DSMs, wait until you own a wankel. Rotary = never ending money pit of dispair.

I drove my N/A RX-7 for 6 years w/ little or no matinence and clocked 226,000 miles before I finally blew one of the apex seals.

You can't base the reliability of this engine on your friends experience. This engine has a reputation for BEING reliable if it is properly taken care of. It is also a simpler design and has less moving parts than a conventional engine. It does drink oil like I drink beer and usually gets terrible gas mileage.

I totally agree.

This car could easily be worth $500 even if the engine was already blown.

Never buy a RX-7 w/o getting a compression test, smoke or no smoke.

hahahahahahaha what in gods name are you talking about? turbo 13b's are about the most unreliable modern engine in existance.. thats what they are known for.. they make no torque, they burn oil, they blow seals and warp rotors if you look at them wrong, inefficent fuel consumptionl, they are expensive to mod.. find an fd that isnt on its second or third motor,..just look through autotrader and see how many cars have a rebuilt motor.. and the ones that havent are going to need it soon.

its an amazingly well built chassis with an interesting but severely flawed engine design. i know the rotory people love them and will defend them to the end, but i can do it faster, easier, more efficiently and more reliably with a conventional piston motor.

hell a stock ls1 in an fc is a mid 12 second car that handles as well as the rotary.. i think the complete swap only adds like 150 lbs, and that is easily countered with a battery relocation and a bit of ballast in the backend.

also if its a running tII in good condition its definately worth it. even if the motor is done its still worth it if the body is straight.. put a v8 in there and be done with it.. or better yet, my dream setup.. a 3.8 turbo grand national driveline.. i *will* have a gn powered fc one day :D

I didn't say turbo.

the n/a ones are definately less prone to self destruction.. less prone to going fast too :)
