I swear subaru forums are just trash.
I bought another 2004 outback. This time an h6 automatic. It's got some shift flare on occasion. Fluid doesn't look good. Currently changing fluid and filter and see what that does. Anybody experienced with 4eat autos?
It has a spin on filter. How convenient.

I don't have much experience with those but it's probably a slush box like every other basic early 2000's auto trans. If it were an EJ I would just 5 speed swap it but the H6 throws a wrench in. Did a fluid/filter change help? Obviously wouldn't expect it to reverse the wear but it may seem smoother I guess. If you're not looking for a teardown soon I would probably add a few ounces of shudder fix. It's just a band aid but I've seen it work wonders on Ford transmissions, for a few thousand miles anyway.

I don't have the energy for a swap. Only on first round of fluid. Changed what would drain. Gonna run it a week and do another change. I think it's a control issue. Solenoids etc. We will see what fluids do

Yeah this is a flare. Revs up a little too much during upshifts. Surprisingly I've found nobody that can comment on a definitive potential cause. Forums are awful. Many say its just the way it is, at least fir the first upshifts after sitting

I can vouch for that shudder fix too. Used it all the time for the crappy Honda torque converters.

Cool that it has a spin on filter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that on a trans before.
Some of the Mitsubishi's are spin on also!

I had shift flare on an 04 outback with the h6. The fluid was always changed and it made it to 300k miles before the water pump let go. Just my personal experience.
You just lived with it? I haven't driven it much. Teenager has it and he tends to exaggerate.

Yeah I could never figure out why it was doing it. I talked to a couple transmissions shops and they told me it wouldn't "hurt" anything. I got the car pretty cheap so I just dealt with it and never had a problem.
