I'm trying to do some research on the OEM floor mats, but I seem to have hit a wall.

I have an original floor mat (passenger side only) that I found in a 1998 Eclipse GS. Besides being old, dirty, and tired, it is different from the Mitsubishi authorized mats that went out of stock a year or so back. I'm hoping to document these into a visual guide, but I can't seem to find any information on the original mats and I'm hoping you all can help.

Here is what I have so far:

The authorized mats are very dark, and actually look black to me. The original mat is gray. It looks like it matches the gray interior carpet of the car I pulled it from. The backing material is very different. The original mat's backing is disintegrating.

I have the original sticker with the part number for the authorized mats, but I could use some help finding information on the original set.

Does anybody know the answers to these questions?
  • What colors were the original mats made in?
  • What are the part numbers for the original mats?
  • Were there OEM floor mats for Eclipse Spyders?
    • What colors, and part numbers?
  • Were there OEM floor mats for the Eagle Talons?
    • What colors, and part numbers?
Thanks in advance for any help with this. 🙂

According to Auto Custom Carpets, the colours were black...mist grey and medium beige... Have a look at this website, and it will give you the colour choices for the different years.
As far as OEM numbers, I'm still looking...
I do believe that OEM mats were available for the Spyder.

My Spyder has original mats in it, they are grey with like purple I think "Spyder" lettering stitched into them.
If you wouldnt mind taking a photo of them, I'll include it in the guide. I'm sure the backing is fragile, so you dont even need to remove them from the car if you dont want to. Even just a close up of the logo would be helpful.

Otherwise I think the driver side would be ideal to photo. That is the one that is a little different than the coupe mat if I am not mistaken?

Thanks a lot! Yeah I can't find part numbers anywhere. 🤔

If you have an original set they are a plushy fabric and match the shade of dark Grey or tan that would match the floor

The original mats had a rubber underside that will degrade and cause all sorts of rubberish debris under the footwell. I'd reccomend removing then from the car and only using them for special occasions.

The authorized copies are usually black and a knobby style fabric. They do not have a rubber underside and typically hold up just fine to normal abuse.

Both the Eclipse and Talon had OEM factory installed floor mats. The Spyder did as well. They came in either gray or tan(no black OEM). The Spyder driver side mat was shaped slightly different to fit around the rear trunk lock/key slot. Talon mats were plain, Eclipse coupe mats had "Eclipse" written down the outside edges and Spyder mats had "Spyder" written down the sides. I do not know the part numbers but they were not a Mitsu standard MD or MR number.

Another tidbit is the hook that held mat onto the carpet. The early version was from Jan. 94 thru March 98 and had three parts total. MR406273 & MR406274 were installed into the carpet and the matching MB828847 clips into the carpet and hooks into the mat. There is also MR480241 which is the later version of the hook. According to Mitsu these were installed from Jan. 98 thru march of 99. I have personally never seen this style but they are out there.
