I have a couple of questions guys. Does anyone know if any of the performance aftermarket smic any better than the factory one? Also, has anyone had a muffler shop bend intercooler pipes to match the factory hoses? I really don't want a fmic bc it doesn't look stock and I like the sleeper look, however I do plan on a big 16g upgrade this summer. Any insight would be beneficial.

I don't know of one but it's a worthy thought. The reason I would think of is that your engine cooling will be worse after you put a FMIC in front of the AC condenser in front of the radiator. And you are in kind of a hot climate so that could be an issue.
If E85 is pretty available in your area, it might be worth switching to that for your fuel. E85 will give you a lot more charge cooling than gasoline, so then there is less need for an intercooler. Then you could try sticking with the stock intercooler and see how that goes.

I live in Mississippi. It gets HOT in summer. That is a factor as well. And, I just don't want to see it.

You "could" use CO2 spray on the intercooler to keep it cool. It is only going to get heat soaked every now and then unless you are hot lapping your car at the track, which is when you would want to spray the IC. Some guys use N2O, but I would imagine it is more $ than CO2.

pretty sure part of the benefit of nitrous sprayers on the IC is that it fogs the engine bay, and the intake usually picks up some of it. CO2 has the potential (if ingested the same way) to cause a huge power drop.

I think the best option would be a MKIV Supra Sidemount- you'll probably need to put together custom piping as the inlet/outlet are bigger than OEM.

I don't think a N2O IC fogger is any way helping the motor, but I can see the CO2 causing some issues if ingested. I wonder what the OP's intentions are that a better sidemount is needed. When I raced my stock auto car, it was fine unless I did back to back pulls at the track, and then it would get hot and we would have to sit her and let her cool off.

Big water jug on the roof with a hose that runs down to the SMIC and drips water on it.

There are few SMIC options, the Supra one being the most popular (at the time).
You might be better served by going with a water/air intercooler. More work and more expensive but more returns. It also doesn't have to be as large as an air/air, so you have more options for fitment but it's all custom. It is, however, severely overkill for a 16g.
Unless you're doing back to back runs, a 16g on the stock SMIC should be fine -- some improvements are 1) ensure a good amount of airflow reaches it and 2) maybe check out a water I/C sprayer system using a switch and cheap pump. Perhaps a spare washer fluid bottle.

A regular muffler shop will likely not use mandrel bends. It doesn't honestly matter, especially with a 16g. My 1g piping had some compression bends in it because that's what the shop did for exhaust and I still spooled a evo1 b16g to 20psi in 3rd by 3400 on a 2.0L 7.8:1 motor. I can't recall if it was 2.25 or 2.5" pipe but it was a FMIC with short route through the cradle.
It's just.. uglier.

Thanks for responses. Daily driving. If I ever do go to the track it will not be often. The supra smic appears to be hard to find. I may be fine with what I have. Just wondering about some ideas I may not have thought of or read somewhere. And i am accumulating parts to do all at once. Timing belt, water pump, turbo, port and polish the exhaust pieces around the turbo, clutch, flywheel. Looks like I need to maybe change out the rear main seal while doing clutch. If I do the rear balance shaft delete while the car is torn apart there may be more seals I can replace while I am in there.

I may take off work a week and do it all at the same time.

I know CX racing gets a bad rap, for good reason but their piping kits are not too bad. They have a Side mount pipe kit for a 16g.

I'd grab some popcorn just for the aftermath of a statement like that :p

I couldn't get any of my 1G BOVs to hold closed above 18-19psi, even crushed and on a gradual ramp, which is odd considering the air pressure should be equal on both sides..
My tial bv50 stays closed all the way to my BLT target of 25psi and beyond, yet still opens as low as a pound.

You can still either make a SMIC or buy one from another chassis. Z32, 3000GT, etc. use similarly sized cores with aftermarket support. If you have fabrication skills or know of someone who does, you can likely buy an appropriate core and have one made.

No go on the oem 3000gt ICs just to add to this. We used to use old DSM stockers as an upgrade. I came from 3si so just didn’t want anyone to buy one hoping it was an upgrade. Td04s are super tiny compared to td05s.

There WAS an old Dejon/Alamo Motorsports side mount in the classifieds a while back, I don’t recall seeing it sell, that’d be the way to go for what you’re looking to do. Even better would be a Supra sidemount as mentioned, issue is like you said they’re not as common as they once were and these “JDM engine” shops get them in a shipping container and want $200 for them (not worth it even in 2023), they’re out there it’s just a matter of stumbling upon one.

If that Alamo intercooler pans out then that with a CX Racing piping kit as mentioned with a Dodge modded stock bov would be the way to go and would closely imitate what was available as a kit from Dejon back in the day. Would make for the most straightforward install over a Supra intercooler that requires a little work to get everything to fit up good.
