I've definitely experienced this.

To that point, I can only offer this: I don't really talk a lot about my car being featured in Super Street magazine or on the Hoonigan Channel (what is now Larry Chen's Auto Focus channel) on here, on Social Media, or really anywhere. But, when people ask about my car, I always literally just say "Google 500hp Galant" with no further details. Then, when they realize it's been featured in Super Street Magazine, on the Hoonigan Channel, blah blah blah...Suddenly they are instantly interested asking all the questions. But, even with all the allure and fame (and I say that as loosely as humanly possible), the Galant just doesn't get the same recognition or acknowledgment as a Shelby Mustang Restomod, a basic bi*** MK4 Supra build, or a 17 rotor R-X7. It's only cool to a very small select few who know what the car is and truly appreciate it for those reasons. I think the same principal applies to the DSM family of cars, just to a lesser extent (certainly when compared to the VR-4 ).

My point is, of the Galant VR-4's out there, my Galant is one of the most hyped up (hyped up is not synonymous for best) builds in existence, and 99.99% of people could still give a shit less about it. That's true for most of the popular DSM builds as well, many of which are well done, popular, and have a decent following...But still don't even come close to attracting the same amount of attention from a crowd. Hell, IMO, even Boostin's Demon doesn't get the attention I think it deserves compared to other platforms achieving way less.

Who cares who likes or doesn't like my car. I like it and that's enough for me. Makes me smile when I get a thumbs up, or whatever, but in the end I really don't care if you love it or hate it. I'm enjoying it for me. Same with my haircut, clothes I wear, or etc. If I like it and my wife likes it, that's all I need.


I do wish more attention would be brought to the platform so we could experience a renaissance of parts/supplies again, but that's a catch-22. Because with that would come all the usual suspects that kill everything that is suddenly make popular.

This is an interesting post because it highlights some weird social issues involved with import cars. For example, you say that there's less and less reason to drive an old 90's car anymore, but it's interesting to note that nobody says this about old muscle care or more expensive imports like the FD rx7, supra etc. I think it's because DSMs have always been in this category where they aren't prestigious, and they aren't worth much, so we always have to justify to ourselves/others why we have them.

For example. I don't think many people feel the need to justify why they drive their old corvette, Camaro or truck because in America it's just understood that driving/owning those type of cars is an acceptable hobby regardless of how slow or old their technology is. But if I tell someone I'm building an eagle talon they tend to get confused and I have to explain that it's turbocharged, AWD and about 650hp which will beat the shit out of pretty much any car they've ever laid their eyes on. Then it gets their attention and makes more sense to them. If I don't explain my build to them, I might as well be building a 100hp fwd ricer for all most people know. And it's not like some 75 Camaro is faster, safer, more technologically advanced or smoother drive; it's only that it is an accepted vehicle by mainstream America. Nobody has to justify why they eat pizza. Everyone likes and accepts pizza but if you eat sushi, you'll have to explain yourself from time to time.

Definitely not the case for me. I've got an EVO 6 and a Callaway Twin Turbo C4 Vette that sit as well. I just always gravitate to the newer cars, and if I want to drive something old I usually take the '67 Vette. Rad era for me is neat to have but too old to feel modern and too new to feel classic...

Of course, all of that goes out the window when I do actually drive one. The EVO, especially, is just SO raw and incredible at carving corners compared to the heavier USDM stuff. The C4 is an incredibly ahead of it's time car. And the Talon just oozes 25+ years of nostalgia for me - and is still the fastest thing I own.

Damn, that's cool you have a Callaway Vette. I came across a short documentary on those a while back; I'd never heard of them.
The old HTA76 is hanging in there LOL. I ended up swapping gates and put all the springs in, now it holds like 39psi to redline and it's night and day vs before. The 10+ year old tires are a little sketchy so I've got some new R888Rs ready to swap on. If I do the G30, then I'd be out of fuel, more at risk of grenading something in the drivetrain, could pop a head gasket, might need more clutch, etc so I'm leaning more toward leaving it as is and just enjoying it being "done". I do want to get it to the track and see what it can do though, hopefully this season I'll get it out. I'd probably want to throw in the 300M t-case that was in the race car for that. It's just sitting waiting to go into my friend's build.

The Callaway was definitely a bucket list car, the right one popped up locally and I couldn't resist. I've always wanted a '93 Cobra and an '89 Turbo Trans Am, but having this kinda makes me think I've got the Rad domestic era covered for now.

That was the main reason for wanting it. Nobody was using one on a DSM, and the flow per wheel size is insane. It's basically the latest gen 3071 and it does 70+ lb/min. My goal was to retain or even improve the response from the current HTA76 in the FP30 bolt-on hotside while gaining 100-150 whp. I'd love to do it, but like I said I don't really want to spend another several grand upgrading what the car would really need to properly support it reliably. I may try to find someone else who wants to run it.

Yeah, my thought is that on my engine the max flow might be close to the turbo I have on there now, but the boost would come in much sooner in the rev range. I wouldn't expect any 70 lb/min on my engine because at ~35psi of boost, let's say a pressure ratio of 3.5, at the Max RPM ! line on the compressor map, Garrett shows 62 lbs/min there. Well for me that would be fine once you add in that it would probably be so much better at lower rpm.
But the turbine housing, exhaust manifold, O2 housing, all different I suppose. So I'm not going to jump right into it either.
 
Don't know if you want to categorize this under 'inspiration' or not but it is incredibly HARD to get rid of a DSM. Especially one you have memories in. This guy was a Rollercoaster, like most are. Had lofty expectations, like most do. But aside from the 2 years I paid for storage space until I had a house to store it, it didn't COST me anything to just sit there in the garage. Well, I thought it didn't anyways. While I drove it 2,200 miles cross country (multiple roadside fixes naturally), once it was here in Washington I couldn't license it because of every single EPA device being removed/defeated so it sat. Once emmissions regulations ran out, I tried bringing it back but neglect reared its ugly head... Mice, specifically, had gnawed through an already iffy 1990 wiring harness at various points that I could (and couldn't) see. 18+ years ago it was fun to have a 'rough and riced up just enough to look slow' car to prowl around in but now... well now, ANY DSM is a rarity to see and stick out worse than a bright yellow '32 coupe. A decision had to be made about where to spend the money in order to 'get my money's worth back out of the built engine. As luck would have it, I found a 93 Talon tsi with a stack of maintenance records but the rods were hammering away, for $800. Under the dust and pine needles it was rust free though. A deep wash and wax revealed a less than perfect body (dings mostly and some peeling clear coat) but it did start and run which was more than the 90 could claim. Fast forward a few years and the motor swap still hadn't happened yet but was still planned. Couple more years to today and it's time to move cross country again and there are a finite number of spots for moving cars... I honestly considered selling the 93 for a trailer to haul a 'dead' car from the Pacific coast to the Gulf of Mexico because of the memories tied to it. Reality and a wife intervened and the compromise was made to pull the 'heart' of the 90 out, crate it and have it ready to transplant into the 93 once we're settled in Texas. I pulled the ECU (DsmLink V2.5) and seats for a little more feeling of 'home', even swapped those Enkei's over to the 93 but it's KILLING me postponing the inevitable call to the pickNpull to haul the remains away. My brain is screaming: There's still a LSD 4bolt! The rear calipers aren't seized! The 90 trans actually shifted without grinding! The windshield isn't chipped or cracked! SAVE IT! SAVE IT! SAAAAAVE ITTTTT! But we know it's time has come. Nobody is going to save a crappy paint DSM with wiring issues. So ask yourself, honestly ask yourself: Can you save it? Is it time to save it? How much time is left to save it? But the most important question is:Do you want to save it and/or handle watching it leave in someone else's possession and in what kind of condition when it does? Regrets suck.

Definitely should save the 90 trans and the LSD 4-bolt! Either to keep or to sell to somebody.

treefall, Washington is a joke right? Because every time the wind blows some trees fall down? And it usually knocks out the electricity. Right?

Thanks for asking. Should be picking up the engine next week. Engine builder lost a bunch of parts I sent to him so he has been trying to figure that out 🙄🙄
 
Just as a suggestion, I think you should log knock sensor voltage this time.
Were you logging it before?
Anyway, even if the Link ecu doesn't have a way to pull back timing based on knock, at least you'd know from looking at a log if you have any knock, and then you could do some prevention.
Did you see my knock log screen shots that I posted over in dwb's thread yesterday and today?
There's actually one advantage to doing it this way. You could use a new 2g knock sensor, or probably any sensor that fits in the hole. You'd still see the spikes.
