Has anyone seen wear like this on fidanza cam gears (on any other brand)? Got these on a part out. Nothing is sharp, so I am contemplating running them. Just curious what people think might have caused this

It looks like someone ran them without a top cover and it got debris in it. The covers are there for a reason, but I don't know if that is what caused that pitting. Never seen it before but most of the motors I take apart start out with stock steel gears.

looks like grit/micro pitting

that will start to ruin your belts up good so replace those with new gears and clean all surfaces on the pullys and covers and seals, best to also replace the belt incase its stuck in there also for peace of mind

First thing I thought of when looking at the pictures. I’ll never understand why people choose to not run covers.
I agree with that statement. I remember on my first DSM when I was a kid I had the washer hose get sucked in there. Luckily I just had to reset timing and didn't bend anything.

I don't run a top cover because I'm not aware of any covers that fit a 6-bolt 2.4L with a DOHC head. 😉

Aside from debris, it looks like the kind of corrosion you get from getting road salt on aluminum parts too 🤷‍♂️

Is this due to an issue with the metal back covers? Curious why there is no real solution yet

We are all scratching our heads trying to figure out WHAT made the pitting in the cam gears.
