Definitely worth saving, but someone is ripping you off to charge you $100 per head stud if that is the stretch bolt you are referring to. You can get all 10 of them for under $200 easily. Then the head gasket job is really not that much work. You could do it yourself and save a ton of money.

Ah yes! We are in limbo now and I have 2 prospective buyers. Hubby has talked with 7 autoshops, 2 mechanics that WOULD have done the job have retired. On the 7th call we found a shop specializing in Datsuns that has a Mits experienced mechanic. She says that head gasket trouble like this on a Spyder is rare. After doing the repair on the spark plug sensors & the timing belt at our original shop, ya gotta wonder. We might truck in it to have her do the job & keep it. Awaiting an estimate.

Sounds like a pain, definitely do what you can to save the car, it’s worth it!

Just to wrap it up for Mits Spyder owners of this vintage, the '98. the update is that the estimate was less than half the first quote we received, and the reviews are solid, rock solid on the shop. We've trucked the car to it and we. will. see.

I've taken it off the "for sale" boards.

So far, hopeful on saving the Eclipse. Thanks for the encouragement. If we get 2-3 more years out of it, it will be most excellent.
