Well I’m far far behind, here’s the recaps.

I had been collecting some parts leading up to the shootout, but was being lazy about getting them on the car. Well, the day before the shootout, I went to start the car before work and it wouldn’t fire. I didn’t hear the pump kicking on so I used link to prime it and got nothing. Checked voltage at the pump to verify it and it had power but wasn’t turning on. Great. Guess I’m calling in to work ANOTHER day so that I can make the shootout haha.

I had a walbro 450 a friend had given to me still sitting on the shelf so I started by putting that in.

Bought an aem X wideband (it’s great) and installed it the day before the shootout. Also redid all the gauge wiring, adding a fuseblock powered by the windshield wiper motor (that wire was already ran to under dash)

Pulled the cyclone intake mani apart and resealed it with rtv. Here’s a pic of the phenolic IM heat spacer that I added awhile back. They work great, seal great, and are reusable to the max. A must have for any dsm for $30.

Drove to the shootout and back with no real problems. Had a good time with friends. There was a total of 7 of us that drove up from Indianapolis.

I bought a old school gen1 fp at the shootout for $100. It had zero shaft play, but was hesitant to spin/kinda felt seized up. The seller said it was in the backseat of a parts car he bought. Well I put some oil in it and spun it by hand a bit and decided to try it out on the car. The turbo has the watergate flapper welded shut, but thankfully I already had a hafe??? Manifold with an external flange and old ass tial waste gate (came in the trunk of the car when I bought it haha). It works. It rips. About 400 miles and zero shaft play at 25psi. Best $100 I’ve ever spent?

As usual, the fun didn’t last for very long

Broke a spring on the xtd stage 3. While a aving up for a new clutch, the clutch in my 1g starts slipping during normal highway driving! Borrowed my dads van and drove it for 4 days then the alternator went out LOL. What luck!

I threw the vr4 back together with the used xtd 2300lb pressure plate and a barely used comp sprung street disc that came with the car when I bought it. Currently have a little over 150 miles on it.

So to recap, this spring I pulled out a xtd stage 3 because I thought it might have been slipping. Replaced it with a used act unsprung street disc and act 2100 pressure plate. The disc hub separated from the friction material after like 5 days of easy driving. Replaced it with an xtd stage 4 the night before a track outing. Went and ran 6 passes with 50 miles of break in, clutch lasted 1200 miles. Replaced it with a stage 3, lost the disc. Replaced it with a comp street sprung.

So I’ve pulled the trans in the galant 4 times this year and once in the talon. Please no more LOL

It’s no secret that the vr4 has had terrible compression since day one (110-125psi warm). A wet compression test didn’t change things and the car has never smoked, so I assumed bent valves. I had to replace the valves in my 1g (see build thread for that) and decided it was finally time to do it on the galant too. Also, I’ve been driving the 1g and the off-boost difference between both cars is wild. The galant is a dog in comparison.

So, off with the head.

Cracked exhaust valve in cylinder 3. Also, found one hell of a boost leak LOL. It wasn’t there when I pulled and re-sealed the intake back in September pre-shootout 🤷‍♂️

wow look at that intake!! hey ive got another cyclone intake if you need one, not sure how the diaphragms are never ran it or BLT'd it.
Thanks but I’m just going to put a stocker on it that I have sitting.

Began head tear down today. Didn’t do a lot of inspecting or taking pictures just working.

Next step, cleaning and inspecting the head over.
