Hello, I have cams that came off a fresh motor, noticed the intake cam end (where the cas enters) has a deep scratch on the middle of journal / lobe. The rest looks good. My machine shop did polished it a bit for me and said isnt a big deal since it’s under but I would like a second opinion. Thanks!

assuming that you can get a replacement of that grind, I would not reuse it. It no longer has a cylindrical surface (more v-shaped now) so the oil cushion between the journal and the cap will be reduced to two thin rings at each end. Wear will be accelerated, and damage could spread to other components. Any idea what caused it? Perhaps something fowed in with the oil and got trapped. How is the bearing cap and head looking?

This would make me second guess all the other work they have done.

You could run it and "might" be able to get away with it... but why risk it. Delta Cams like someone else mentioned does spray welding and could repair that.

If you can’t get it welded and turned on a lathe, might be worth seeing if there is something like this available for a camshaft;

The issue that I could see is if that grove is from a dried up oil seal, even a new oil seal will not keep oil from leaking. Thus you need to build the area back up.

I am assuming this is an engine with a 1g cas.

whom ever put the head together did not clean something out or use lube to install it under the caps and ran it fry, thats a huge groove and also slightly pitted.

them saying run it is not a good thing and they have no business saying things like that! proves how bad they are as a shop and quality then!

send them to delta as above mentioned and he will solve this just fine for you. how bad is the cap cap? were they all from this head when it was put back together or did they come from another car?

Source a replacement cam. OMG

If you are going to be using the head that the cam came out of I would be very concerned about the cam journal condition on the head as well as either having the cam welded and ground down or getting a new one.

There is a saying about polishing turds and that's what the shop was trying to do. Steer clear of the shop that told you that's ok to run.

Off topic and I'm sorry, but if Delta can build up a cam, I am wondering if they could fix "crank walked" cranks flanges.
Just a thought.
Continue with the cam discussion.
