As part of the inherited Talon, I’ve found parts around the house and basement, etc.

I found an extra ECU (MD165531) and I intend to use this one for ECMlink and pull out the one on the car that has the old school Todd Day “mods” along with the original Super AFC.

As I was socketing the extra and replacing the caps, it occurred to me that the wire jumpers on the bottom might not be standard. That and it looked like at least two of the old caps had been replaced (poor soldering). On the other hand there’s this coating of “varnish” over both sides of the board which I assume is a factory applied coating. Comes off stubbornly with alcohol.

Anyway, is this normal for the ECU or do I have one that’s messed with in some way.?

If you flip the board over I'm sure there will be signs of corrosion around the pins of the orange EFI filters under the heatsink.

Those wires are to fix the corroded traces that existed then. If they didn't remove the filters and clean there may be more now.

The "varnish” is a waxy conformal coating to keep moisture away.

Not to get off track but I’m glad you brought this up. I’ve been digging on the “old way” for a few days burning up some time and found some info regarding Todd Day’s work after I had mentioned it to you the other day. If I could remember which site I found it I’d site it but the explanation was Todd Day’s work being so early his chips were minimal on the amount of modification done, from what I got they included injector scaling and maf compensation but didn’t alter the timing tables and fuel tables so to give a better answer on how your wife was using the afc along with Todd’s work.

I know you’re going ECMlink and that doesn’t pertain to your actual question but I thought of our conversation on that the other day (can’t remember which thread that was). However, to give insight on what you have going on here I did find Todd’s website is still indeed alive. I can’t remember if I found it in it’s true form or in archives posted by @Jane Hacker in another thread we have going on but if you’re interested I can tag you in that thread, as there may be some info from Todd himself you may find useful to what you have here.

Yup, as I now take a much more critical look at the neighborhood, see photo. I can also see some goo under orange components too but the heatsink is in the way.

Thanks that would help, sure!

In light of not having the extra ECU now, I’m going to slow down and just focus on what is. Finish the idle surge problem (going to take apart and clean the TB first) and install the catch cans. Take car of the cosmetics I want to hit and then we’ll see. Maybe I’ll send this board off the the ECMlink guys to evaluate.

Since it's an EPROM ECU sending it off to ECMTuning is a great idea. The heatsink will need to come off. They will likely replace the damaged EFI Filters and repair the traces again. You can see some of the missing SMD capacitors and the corrosion damage to the D109 Diode and the two traces that ran under the one of the SMD caps. Two of the patch wires underneath are to fix those.

Every place where the solder isn't shiny or the copper isn't copper colored is corrosion cause by the electrolyte leaking.

IIRC, TMO Chips didn't include injector scaling or MAF compensation. Back then he didn't know how to do those either.
What he did offer was:

- Rise revlimiter to your desire
- No fuel cut
- Gauge mod (o2, battery, IPW, timing, octane)
- Stutter box 4k-6k w/ 500 increment
- Clutch cut (stutter for shifting)
- Valet security
- Failure blinker code
- Shift light

All the TechnoMotive chips that I've run across that did have mods for injectors, etc turned out to be features added by Jeff O or others after the fact.

ah yes that’s how it went. I read it in a late night fog I could remember it was limited but couldn’t remember in what areas, thank you for the correction.
