I'm going to put 2gb talon wheels on my '95 tsi. The car is bone stock, but I plan to order some Feal 441 coilovers for it this week. I'm not a big fan of the thin sidewall look very much, and will probably only lower the car an inch or so. Anyone think 235/50/17 will work? I know 225/45 seems to be the go-to size, but I'm wondering if 235 will work with the taller 50 profile.

Thanks.

I run a 225/50/17 tire (see attached pic) on EVO 8 Enkeis and there is roughly a finger's width of room between the top of the tire and the control arm bolt that sticks through the knuckle, as well as a finger's width of room between the tire's outermost side and the knuckle itself. When I compare my tire size to a 235/50/17 tire, the one you want to run, it means the tire will be 5mm higher, so in theory it still wont hit the control arm bolt. It will also stick out 5mm each side, but again, it may just fit without rubbing on the knuckle.

That said, this is all based on the ET of your wheels. The Enkei wheel is 8 inches wide and has a positive offset of 38mm. I can't recall the stock 2gb Talon wheel specs, I know they are 17" but I believe the width was 7 or 7.5 inches, and the offset probably +44? Someone needs to confirm those, but basically what I'm saying is, you really need to know the exact specs of the wheels first, before you can determine if that tire size will be safe to run.

Also, as a last note about running higher tires: they will rub out your front splash shields. Mine have huge holes in them because the car leans so much in corners that it makes the tires contact the splash shields and rubs them out over time. Something to keep in mind!

It is my understanding all DSM wheels have a +46 offset and are 6.5" across.

The Feals have adjustable bumpstops, so that may help with the upper splash shields. I'm honestly just going to drive this car around on the street on the weekends, maybe take it to the beach or something. Certainly no racing.

Ok so here's the verdict. Last week I ordered the tires from tirerack. Yesterday they arrived and today I had them mounted/balanced.

They do not fit on the front of my 2g. They hit the top of the spindle and need about 5mm clearance. I have 1/4" spacers, which were about 6.5mm. Those brought out the tire enough to clear, but my studs weren't long enough so that was a no-go. And even then, I don't know how they would work with the fender with the suspension loaded. Options seem to be a spacer with extended studs + possibly roll the fender, or modify the spindle like @ec17pse did here , or just run a different tire all together. Well that's not happening as I bought all 4 and had them mounted, the deed is done. As for the rear of a 2ga, no idea as I stopped there. I do know 2gb spindles have more clearance, so there's hope I suppose if even needed.

I decided to try them on the project 1ga in the driveway. They fit with a few mm to spare between the spring perch and a few mm to spare from the fender. Absolutely perfect. Nicely flush with the fender, no poking or being in too far. There is no more rubber fitting with the stock strut and unmodified fender. This is the all end all size for the situation.

I took some pictures and will add them later.

If its only about 5-6mm you can grind the recess back and get away withbthat and no support. Thats exactly what i have and been running for a while now without issues, thats do able for most people.

Note to make sure you do not dig in and smooth all surfaces level after, you dont want any cuts or stress risers, basically make it as fluid of a transition as you can.

I also ended up doing my rears for my wide ass 295 tires and i got a good amount of clearance on those and it was done the same way and i got away without welding on those also.
