Hi, I drive a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS with the 420A motor.

Recently I had 3 instances were my vehicle decided to die on me while driving. I was driving to work one day on the highway going 50mph and then the car died. I lost cluster readings like speed and rpm. So seeing that I died I shifted into neutral and it started on its own and was able to put back into gear and keep driving. No key crank needed, this is also a 5 speed manual. It drove fine after that for about 5 minutes. Then as I was going to pass someone after a stoplight going 40mph under acceleration. It dies again I was not able to get it to start back up in neutral, or with a key crank.

This time I noticed my tach readings were going crazy the speed would go from zero to 40 as like it was just getting the reading or something. I had to roll down the hill to work. When I got to work it would not crank at that moment.

When lunch time came it started first try. Then the next day I drove from my home to shop (about 2 miles) with no issues. But when I shut the car off and sat for about 5 minutes car would not start, but turned over. I had fuel pressure at 45. (I installed after market regulator a while back.) After sitting for a while it cranked up, was able to get a mile down the road then it died on me again.

But this time a little different because it was kind of rough, the other times were just smooth shut off completely. I read on here that there are 2 stock grounds for this vehicle I found the chassis one and the engine one wiggling them both did not make the car shut off when I was idling.

What are future steps I should take or things to look for. What are somethings I should test or think of replacing.

Just in case anyone sees this thread, I was able to fix my problem by replacing my crank sensor. I confirmed no spark and getting fuel. I also would recommend checking the Auto shut off relay, and going through different test before buying a crank sensor off Rip. I also did not have a engine code. But just definitely go through every test you can without spending money on unsure part diagnoses.
