My transmission is slipping very bad, I'm not knowledgeable of cars really. I think I may have a boost leak, but the trans isn't changing gears as it should. Could it be the auto clutch going out or trans.... what's a cheaper fix to start with? Should I fix the clutch then trans or trans then clutch and see if it's just one or the other. Biggest question of all is, what at trans can I use (7 bolt 4g63t) or would it be cheaper to manual swap it? I believe the 420a has a 7 bolt trans pattern, can I just swap it from that car to this one?

Any and all help would be great thanks

What is the trans doing? Is it starting in say 3rd gear? If so thats called limp mode and your tcu is probably toast.

If you would rather drive a stick in the first place a car with a bad trans is a the perfect opportunity to 5 spd swap it. Since car is turbo, dont put a 420a trans in it get the turbo trans.

As far as the boost leak. You can get a blt, or make one and track down the leak. Or go clamp by clamp from the j pipe to the throttle body and make sure to tighten everything up, make sure your hoses are properly fitted and then clamp everything down real tight

It starts in 1st gear but when changing to 2nd and sometimes 3rd and fourth it just revs high and doesn't accelerate then it'll change gears fast hitting 3rd for a short minute lately. I noticed it doesn't have as much problems if I drive more "normal" and not accelerate quickly

Update, I checked hoses and clamps, mind you I'm not a mechanic, I seen a hose loose and the clamp laying on platform uner battery housing area, it went on the intake, I decided to check clamps that are on make sure they're secured correctly and found the dam fuel line had a crack. I go to remove the clamp and the hose snapped right off with the slightest touch! I replaced it and now my car runs a lot smoother. It's having less trouble switching gears or atleast less often but the issue still remains. And this is my daily work vehicle (LOL ik everyone says 2G's are not dailies...😆 )

Thanks for your input on the tcu. I never new of such thing and have been checking into it. But if I do make the swap to manual the only question I have would be well 2...
Would you suggest swapping my 420a to an automatic and keeping the trans and stuff as back up for this? And if so would the 420a shifter cables go with that trans still or no? Cuz I have a set of gst shifter (manual) cables and a set of 420a cables. It was hard to obtain these too as they're discontinued.

Again thanks for your input/feedback/help. I truly appreciate it 🙏🏼 any suggestions on books to buy to help learn the 4g63 engine for a noob?

Since the car is turbo. Your gonna blow a 420a tranny real quick. Theres plenty of turbo trans out there u could buy and have peace of mind not breaking on you first time u hit boost.

Books or whatever no dont wast ur time. In the top left drop down menu. Scroll down to resources. Theres PLENTY of things to read up on. Diagnosing, free mods, just tons of stuff we have collected over the years. Plus there's plenty of user created things to check out. Many members over the years have contributed to common issues and fixes. Product reviews, umm tutorials. Just way too much to list. Basically its the dsm Bible per say

You cannot swap a trans between 420a and 4g63. They aren't remotely the same. They're not even on the same side of the car.
