What thread is that? I'd love some pics since I never took many of it.
sorry I meant your old thread about wanting to find the car. The only pic I know of is your avatar. You're right the previous owner is Scott Miller. He probably had the best of what you could have back in the day. Somebody probably didn't know just what they had at that low miles.

Ah ok. Yes whoever ended up with it likely didn't know what they had. I never should've sold it in the first place, let alone to my buddy who I knew didn't have a garage or really take care of things well. But marriage problems lead to making stupid decisions I guess.

I remember MDSOG but I don't think I was a member as I was younger and out and about more than online back then. I remember reading the Talon Digest a lot though! I use to have an email account through @turbo.com or something similar, which a DSMer started if I remember correctly.

Got the head off today. All the intake valves are bent to hell. That would explain zero compression. I had every intention of putting the rebuilt head on this weekend as well, but found some cylinder wall scoring that I don't like. Pics are attached. Can't feel anything with a fingernail but the shiny areas have lost the cross hatching in some areas. All cylinders have similar markings at the very back and front of each one. Hopefully it won't take much to clean up, but I may as well toss in some forged pistons and rods at this point with ARP hardware. What's a good combo for 500hp goal? I don't want aluminum rods.

I still debate about ever going for more power, maybe 800hp tops, but a dogbox worries me for a street car. Then I watch videos of people driving a car with a dogbox just fine. So I don't know LOL. It wouldn't hurt to build the block for a higher output later on.

After some research and talking to a couple people I trust very well, it seems those cylinder marks are normal signs with high mileage. I am moving in a couple months across the country to Orlando and need to get my Talon on a trailer at that point, which isn't easy not under it's own power considering my driveway and street make it really hard to back a trailer in front of the garage. So I will cross my fingers and toss the rebuilt head back on tomorrow. As long as she runs good enough to drive onto a trailer I'll be happy, then plan on a built shortblock after I'm in FL.

I decided to try and find an EVOIII intake manifold and finally found one after searching a few days. So while I wait for that to arrive I'll wire in the new CAS and ignitor connectors. Then the new head will go on once I have the EVOIII intake manifold bolted up.

New head is on and got it started a week ago. Unfortunately it still has an oil leak that I tracked to the front balance shaft oil seal. Got that sprocket off today and found the seal was pushed out and barely hanging in there, damn near fell out as soon as I touched it.. Then found these marks on the case around the seal, in attached pics. Prior owner must've changed that seal at some point and marred it trying to pry out the seal. Fortunately it feels smooth inside where the seal fits. New seal is ordered and hopefully have it back together next weekend.
The short time it was running she sounded good except for idle surge. Will track that down once the oil leak is fixed.

I got the new balance shaft seal in and timing all back together yesterday. Let some fresh rtv set up for a day and she fired right up today! Idles good, no surge, but a tad high at 1,100 rpm. The BISS o-ring is new so I'm sure I just need to set the idle, but she warmed up and not seeing any leaks so far.
The HLAs are new Topline revised, so hopefully they quiet down soon. But damn it feels freaking awesome to hear her run again!

I just started mine for the first time after a rebuild. It does feel freaking awesome.
How long was yours down for? Mine was almost 9 years cause I didn't have much money or time back then plus other obligations so I waited till I could do it right. It sucked but I am glad that I waited.

Too bad you’re not moving closer to Pensacola. It’d be nice having another one here. Congrats on getting it running. Nothing like having a car be down for years and finally hearing it run again.

It was in a climate controlled storage unit since 2008. It had a fresh engine when it went in. But the engine had damage from detonation and a terrible tune. I had to rebuild it again.

Yeah Pensacola is a bit far. I'm hoping the DSM scene in Orlando is alive and well.

Damn that sucks. I hope to put my ECM Link in later this year along with bigger pump, injectors and fpr, then get tuned with Kevin Jewer. I've talked to him about it already, unfortunately it has taken longer than I hoped.

Could also consider @v8s_are_slow as he is relatively near you. Not sure if he still does tuning but he’s a guru with it.

I have owned this car for almost two decades and driven it maybe 10-15k miles. Not getting any younger. The thrill of making a pull in a property tuned and maintained DSM is better than any drug. Man do I need a hit. I am breaking in my new motor this weekend, can’t wait.

Definitely! It's been years since I've felt boost and even longer since I've truly launched a DSM. Did a lot of street and track racing back in the 90s and early 2000s with past DSMs. This one was my only car from 2009-2013 so I took it easy, and had many long trips with it. She was great as a daily but eventually I needed a truck and let her sit, albeit it too damn long. I hope to get to the DMV tomorrow and get tags so I can get her out on the road again. The stock suspension is trash though, so I am looking for coilovers. May have found a used set of Fortune Auto coilovers for a good deal. I have a set of used Tokicos on (I think) D2 springs I bought roughly 12 years ago, but if they are D2 springs then it'll be too low for my tastes. The springs are dark purple and no markings on them.

I may reach out to him after I get down there and ready for the fuel upgrades. Thanks!

I just saw you're moving to Florida. Kind of a bummer as you're not too far from me and Marty. Gives me hope for my 97 I've let sit for 3 years now.

I hope you get it up and running soon. Not too many DSMs on the road anymore.

I've been to OKC several times over the past few years but always a quick business trip along with meeting a good friend for dinner before I head back. It's a 3.5 hour trip, not bad for sure.

My car is welcoming me back into the DSM world. On the same day I got a new license plate and insurance the drivers door handle decided to break. 😆
I wasn't expecting that one to break as it felt solid, whereas the passenger side feels weak and ready to break. So I ordered the pair off Amazon and will jump on the billet ones when they're available again.

I also found a used set of Fortune Auto coilovers with low miles here on the Classifieds, along with Volk rear control arms for a good deal. I understand that spherical tops are ideal on 2Gs but I'm not autocrossing or anything aggressive, so hopefully they'll be fine without spherical tops. I'll drag race occasionally at OSW but more or less just to see where she's at, and myself too.

I'll post the D2 springs and Tokico Illuminas for sale soon. Reach out if you want them.

Try to get the Dorman HELP! brand if you can. The regular Amazon/eBay ones have tabs made out of aluminum foil. The HELP! Brand really remind me of OEM and have a nice thick tab.

I looked on Amazon, ebay and Rockauto and didn't find Dorman. I already ordered the pair off Amazon so I'll check em out when they arrive. Hopefully they're good enough to last till the billet ones are available, which Tony said at the end of the year.

This is the drivers side.

This is the passenger side

I knew the part numbers so it's easier for me to find, but they work so much better in my experience VS the ebay/amazon handles.

I didn't actively search for Dorman but wish I had. The ones I got coming are BOXI. Maybe they come from the same place? I'll post pics when they arrive, maybe you can tell.

Well I've taken the car on two short trips, maybe 10 miles total. I have a driveline whine when cruising under constant throttle. Tap the gas or let off and the noise disappears. The t-case was rebuilt and a new u-joint was put on the front of the driveshaft with a new yoke. Noise starts up around 30-35mph and is steady at 55-60mph though maybe a little louder. I was told it may need some break-in time but it is loud enough to be worrisome. T-case and rear diff have Redline Heavyweight Shockproof. I'm going to doublecheck the fluid level soon, but I would like some feedback before I dig into it. Searches lead to whine under acceleration and deceleration, idle, etc which doesn't seem to pertain to my issue. Can the carrier bearing whine like this? I don't have any clunks or vibration other than my worn stock suspension which will be replaced soon. The sound appears to be from middle right under the center console, but it's loud enough that it may be hard to tell for sure. Also, front wheel bearings were new not long before I parked the car 9 years ago, as well as the right rear wheel bearing.

Trans and clutch, both stock (131k miles), seem fine. Shifts good and neither was touched during my maintenance and upgrades the last couple years.
