Well......now that I have the car running, I am finally able to do a bit of driving. Sunday, I went a half mile down the road and turned around, testing fueling and making sure I was holding fuel pressure (all good there). I am on the half mile back at about 50% throttle and out of the blue, OD is gone. No gear. I figure its the endclutch but don't know why it failed so today, I rebuilt a spare endclutch for a quick swap out of the one in question and here is what I found when I pulled the cover off of my NEW DTR transmission. Almost ZERO MILES ON IT.
I am very disappointed to say the least.
Take a look.....:banghead:
I swear, I can't win with these cars so I'm about to give it up. An old man can't just keep R&Ring transmissions. Money, time LOST and an old body are just about done.
Am I pissed.....well yeh

Holy. I don't even know how that is possible. Aside from the snapped shaft, that transmission looks incredible. But I have no clue if that can happen just from wear and tear of parts, or improper installation.

Hope it's made right.

Oh no, more "Holy Blocks"

I would be lucky if I had 50 miles on that trans. :(
All I did was bolt her up. She is nice and clean and had real good pressures in all packs. I really have no clue. I HAVE ROASTED overdrives a few times, hell once I welded the pack together but this appears to be a flaw in the shaft.

I've seen it before but typically when someone is making a hit in 4th does it snap the input shaft. Usually it takes a bit of power too, but the shafts are weak at that spot.

Could it have been using an old/abused input shaft? Is there anything realistically that can be done to check or “screen” the shafts so this doesn’t happen in the future? Like shot-peening or whatever.

Unless you are using a JB Designs 300m input shaft, I wouldn't do pulls in overdrive whatsoever. It could have been a fluke, but you are putting a lot of strain on the end of the input shaft either way.

I thought that was like the first law of auto dsm, never let it have even 1psi in overdrive. Actually I think even pretty much all older automatics ever, don't abuse them in overdrive. Can't really be mad/blame the car for user error.

When someone ran a stop sign leaving my neighborhood and tagged me on the front passenger corner. More on the rebuild in my build profile.

Tim/Kurt, which shaft is it? The mainshaft? I am going to try ONE MORE TIME to get this car to just drive to town. I was at 42% thottle and around 250hp, 250tq. Car was not running good at all, which is why I went a half mile and turned around.
If I know what to buy, I can source one and then proceed (If I still have the "drive" to do it).
I know it had great pressures when it came from DTR according to the sheet I got. 200psi in all 4 packs. Hit GREAT. It had to be a previous owner because I only wish I made power like that, I would be SMILING instead of grumpy. I was logging at the time so I went back and looked just to see WTF?
Thanks buddy!

I'm sure it was just a random shaft when it was put together. Yes I wish it had been magnafluxed. I learned long ago, no 4th gear pulls, just lock it out. When JUST DRIVING, I use overdrive. I was very surprised to see what I saw when I pulled the endcover and pulled the OD unit off......and the shaft comes with it. Anytime I have had a overdrive issue, I have been on the throttle hard and forgot to lock out 4th, so I just assumed something had went wrong and the clutches were shot. Hell, they look great, smell great, fluid is great, shaft is SIHT.

It at least looks minimal and repairable. This is a GOOD Carnage picture! :thumb:

The 355 SBC we had in my oldest son's Camaro. I had never seen a piston turn upside down in the bore before. That kid sure is hard on my stuff ROFL #6 rod (or half of it) wanted to share #5 cylinder. Man it was hard to tear this apart just for the picture.

THAT is Great!!!! :thumb: We are all trying our best to keep as many alive as possible.

Marty, that is the input shaft you snapped the end off of. You will need full disassembly from oil pump side, remove front clutch, forward clutch, end clutch (LOL already removed), so you can replace the input shaft and seals on it. I do have a great condition W4A33 input shaft on the shelf I've had bagged and set aside for a rainy day for like 10 years.

Is it a "rainy day"?
I wish I lived closer so when (not if) I had a little question, I could drop by. I live in the middle of "No Where".
Thanks Tim! :)
I no you are bogged down with work or I'd just send it your way.

Yeah, I'm booked like the rest of this year currently LOL.

Yes, I would be happy to help with my input shaft if you need it.

Was my worst carnage, messed up the block surface as well.
