With Tesla EVs being out, I feel even less motivated to get my GVR4 running again. Talk to me.

Hey all. About 7 years ago, an injector rail broke on my cylinder head for my GVR-4. I could not extract it without pulling the head. I wanted to put a built head on there that I had so I took the head off and the car has been sitting for 7 years. Life happened since then. Every year I swear that I am going to try to put it all back together but I read about how quick these EVs are with their sub 2.0 0-60 times.

I know they don't sound as cool as ICE vehicles but a quick car is more important than a good sounding one.

Of course, I don't have the budget to get a new EV and I don't really like how they look personally.....but I always enjoyed that 4g63t being the underdog....but now it seems even less so as technology progresses.

Should I toss the GVR-4 and give up or build it? I am probably not the only one who thinks about this...but I might be one of the few to talk about it.

Thanks!

If that’s the case, please change your name to EVfun 😂. EV’s are fast and if you’re wanting speed, it’s not a bad option. $2k to upgrade the software in a random parking lot and it’ll be faster. Not sure if you know who Rich builds is but he tried to repair a Tesla on his own and needed the repair manual to do so. Tesla declined to help him. I didn’t really follow the story much after this but he was able to fix it on his own. Long story short, if something goes wrong past the warranty, you’re sol.

Pull up your sleeves and fix the Galant. Head replacement takes 1 day and if it’s a broken rail bolt in the head, that’ll take a few hours to fix.

Lol....smarty pants. I appreciate the post. I really do. No idea who Rich builds is but that sounds scary.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Dude a galant vr4 is a limited production car that’s not as common as a 9v Tesla. You put that ol’girl back together because you want to enjoy a unique special car with a history AND the potential to be however fast you want it to be, not because some EV car might beat it, there’s always somebody faster, the only reason to abandon the galant is if your no longer in love with it, in that case pass her on to someone who is. I’m going thru the ringer with mine right now but I’m still just as excited as ever to drive her again, anyways man I wish you luck with whatever path you choose :thumb:

I second that post Jeremy! Why the hell would anyone get a stupid EV Tesla when they could have something classic and easy to fix and more unique?? I live in SoCal and there's a Tesla on every block and every fourth car on the freeway is a Tesla and they all drive like pricks and they think they're something special, always speeding 30mph over limit and cutting in/out of carpool lane like there's no solid double yellow line...SCREW TESLA EVs fix your car and enjoy it

i think you should go with the EV and hook up

pieceofcloth

with your unwanted GVR4.
I'm sure there are alot of us on here that wouldn't mind getting it running. If your into the EV thing, might as well let some one else enjoy that outdated gas vehicle. 🏎️

Sure, a new EV may be faster with fancy tech but I personally don’t care how fast it is if I feel like I’m driving an appliance. I don’t even look at those cars, I have no idea which ones are fast or whatever. Give me a rad era car with some history and soul any day.

I was just about to say that "I feel like I'm driving a appliance". I just don't feel like they have a soul. Everything about them feels just wrong to me, like they are strictly a A to B ride. Like "Librarian Aunt vs Drunk read neck Uncle". It's good and I know EVs are and have to be the future. The future of petrol cars will have to end, but dang it in my lifetime I'll sabotage any attempt to force EVs on me as long as I can :p

If you want an electric vehicle, go to the golf course.
my thoughts exactly,

gas, fire, explosions === f***ing awesome :hellyeah:
running on batteries is for toys

When DSM's first came out and were one of the quickest affordable cars 0-60, V8 guys scoffed at them. Common criticisms were that turbos were silly and killed the sound of the engine. There is no replacement for displacement. Carburetors rule due to cost and tuneabilty. EFI systems cost thousands of dollars to tune.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Electric cars are the "new" DSM's, an exciting leap in automotive technology.

Lol go post the same on an EV forum and they will tell you the complete opposite as here. Nothing wrong with that and everyone has an opinion.
I do agree with TK's9d2TSi. A Tesla is the wrong platform if you're into DIY repairs and mods. Furthermore I don't see any of the current EVs lasting anywhere near as long as DSMs, both mileage and age.

For me it's the interior of Teslas that I can't tolerate. I have an ipad at home. I don't want one on my dash board, regardless of powertrain. Someone is going to do an electric eclipse swap before long (though they will need the drivetrain from a pickup to handle that torque). We'll see what kind of compromise that makes when it happens. I would do a conversion on my 99 RAV4 if it were just a little more accessible. After I finish my eclipse. And my Dodge. And my porch. And....

The tech for the batteries, recharging, range limits, being tied down to the EV's service garages and not being able to much of anything to it to mod or tinker with it keeps me away from EVs. And the biggest thing for me is the COST of buying EVs. So far cars like Tesla's cost so dang much. Ya they are fast and fun, initially, but after several runs the batteries drain and then the performance diminishes. So for me it's still going to be a while before tech actually catches up to real world demands and smooths out some of those issues. For now I'll stay with my dinosaur fuel cars. But in any case, GVR4s are pretty rare these days and the numbers keep diminishing more and more. Fix up the Galant and don't let it rot away into time. The DSMs if they ever were underdogs they weren't for long. I remember back when the 4g63 cars burst out onto the scene they were eating 5.0s and the Camaro/Firebirds left and right. The GVR4s were spanking Taurus SHOs, Lumina Z34s and the supercharged Pontiac Bonnevilles. If you decide to "Toss" the Galant please let me know first, I'll take it! :)

This is something that has bothered me for a while now especially when I came across some random video about one of the Teslas running easy 9's. Car culture as we know it is fading away. We're no longer in a world where knowledge and labor will make you fast or respected in the car scene. The car "community" has devolved into just buying expensive fast cars right off the show room. Any random idiot can go take out a loan on a Tesla or vette and make 700hp easy to demolish your DSM that you spent weeks trying to figure out one small issue with your ignition. And you're still only making 650hp which is an incredible feat on a DSM and took you years to accomplish. Every single car meet in my area is just focused on exotics, Teslas and vettes that the owner didn't build. Nobody gives a shit how you routed this sensor, how you upped the timing in this area or how you went to higher compression pistons. What's the max hp this car makes and is it expensive? The end. Whoa! Everyone come gather around this stock Lambo. Hey bro do you change the oil on this thing? Whoa is that a stock intake? Sick. What are the monthly payments on this thing? Sick bro.

I've just moved on. You're not going to be a "VIP" car at any meet and you're not going to be the fastest guy in town. Just build a cool car for yourself that's unique and isn't the same f***ing hellcat or vette that you see 30x a day and at every meet. Your car can still be fast as shit and have a ton more traction than many of these 80k turds that can't put any of that power to the ground without spinning off into a crowd of children.

Church! Do what YOU want and to hell with everyone else. I'm sick of hearing LS this LS that Coyote this blah blah. Ya you can make insanely cheap speed and nice cars with those platforms, but do your own thing, try to figure things out on your own and don't just follow what other people do. And if it's not fun to you then what are you doing? Put the FU back in FUN!! :p

Agreed. I used to love browsing Bring a Trailer. Lots of projects half completed for sale, or neat old survivors that I had forgot were ever on the road (Saab Sonet, anyone?). Now they need to rename it Bring your Banker. Full of newer Porsche, BMW, other exotics, or restomod 4x4, all for insane money.
The actual cool cars at prices a hobbyist could afford to buy are next to nil.
But in 10 years finding a gas station will be like finding a pay phone today. Wow! Remember those!
