We were on the subject of tools.

I've been looking for something like this for a while.

I looked at the continous anti-reverse on my fishing reals versus the ratchet tooth cheaper models. I also looked at the overunning clutch on an auto trans I once rebuilt for a 4x4 truck. I thought hmm why don't they build ratchets like that.

I guess they do.

No teeth to break, easy servicing, easy rebuild and the full range of motion gets transmitted to the fastener.

This is a mag review. So look at it in that light. However, I have toyed with these babies and am saving for a 1/4 in. 3/8 in and 1/2 in set.

FINALLY someone has made a "ratchet" with a Sprague clutch. For years I've had a little Lisle handle that has a ¼" hole in it, like a wee-tiny ratchet handle, made for dashboard screws and the like- it came with two bits, a flat and Phillips. One of the best things about the design, besides having no backlash, is that on freewheel there is _no_ drive- no matter how loose it is, it won't back-drive a fastener like a ratchet will.

But eighty bucks? Holy dick-in-the-butt, Batman.

Do a search on gearless ratchet on google or something and you will find that Lisle brand tool Defiant was talking about.

Lisle makes some good stuff. Snrap on, Mac and others sell lisle stuff as does sears and other places.

The lisle magnetic socket racks kick much ass.

I have some snap on ratchets but untill they offer a roller clutch model this particular version of the Mac>Snap-on.

Go to pep boys. They have ratchets with twisting handles for those hard to reach bolts. They rock as well, great for tight spots.

Seconded on the Gear Wrenches, those things are gorgeous. If only they'd been around twenty years ago...

I've not tried the Craftsman sets with the ratchet switch on them yet, but flipping over the GWs isn't terribly challenging- and they have knurling on the torque edge of the handle so you can feel if it's setting on the nut in the right direction. I got my set at NAPA at Christmas, they had a kit with a nice rebate. And this outfit is flex-headed.

i actually work at sears in the tools department and i must say that these new mac gearless ratchets sound awesome. craftsman needs to get on the ball and make a set of these quick. Cmon craftsman make these so i can use my discount hehe. later, kevin.:p

Up from the dead.
I just broke my snap on 3/8 long handle again.
I never liked it as the ratchet is too hard. I once had a facom ratchet I loved but I bought another and it wasn't as good.
What is the go too now? All my new craftsman stuff sucks. I lost all my tools 8 years ago and the stuff I bought to replace it sucks. Most all of it. Sockets are ok but the ratchets are sloppy, wrenches are poor quality except the polished stuff. All craftsman.

a nice ratched it BRITOOL! facom are good as i have some but britool are amazing quality and you can get the silent ones which are so smooth and micro increments

Gear Wrench still seems to make the best ratcheting wrenches. Matco makes the best toolboxes and sockets. Craftsman doesn't make great tools anymore, any Craftsman tools I have is either a backup or a beater. At this point Kobalt is making better tools than Craftsman.

I have some Cresent tools and they are holding up well so far, along with my Craftsman and "pawn shop" tools.

What I did buy most if it was the USA made craftsman in 2013. It's ok. The only really crap stuff compared to my old craftsman stuff was some wrenches. They are the non usa stuff and the finish is poor. Honestly what I did was go nuts with an insurance check after the tornado. Black Friday I filled a cart with every item I wanted and then some.

Also any craftsman ratchet in the last 20 years has been sloppy compared to stuff I had from the 70s and 80s
I had a Craftsman ratchet lock up completely during my first use. Warranty services are a pain the the ass so I'll just use my other ratchets and toss it.

Best ratchet I ever owned is the Harbor Freight 3/8 and 1/4" drive universal...I have some good Craftsmen from the 1980s which have been rebuilt, but the new replacement gears are cheaply made...but these Harbor Freight ratchets are so quick and adaptable because you can remove the bolt and then screw it out like a screwdriver, and the quality is actually pretty good!
