So, I'm going forward with the plan to swap the SOHC head for a DOHC head. I picked up a head from a buddy of mine. I was aware that the engine jumped time, so a rebuild was planned for. I finally got around to fiddling with the head.

I pulled the cams, rockers and lifters. I am currently leak testing the head. Check this shit out.

Its always interesting seeing more ppl doing this swap
Honestly, I can't wait to start tearing into it. The main reason I've decided to go with the 4g63 swap is because I just so happen to have a 4g63 and a transmission laying around. And the biggest push has been the fact that I just so happened to destroy my current transmission (most likely input shaft), so I figured it's now or never.

The transition going out on my is how I ended up doing the swap too. Just a suggestion before buying any go fast parts just make sure the swap is completely done and running right with all maintenance done. Also don't cut corners like I did because you'll pay for it in the long run. Well good luck and god speed.

Looking to do this to my 98 Spyder automatic. Is the list pretty much the same? What things would vary from the manual? Fairly new to all this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure but it should be AFAIK. You could always manual swap your car too, if you're into that.

You might be able to get parts for those from Ricky (@dacowgod) at rixracing or Stevie Miller at Miller import Parts.
Thanks man! I've been researching everything I can but all the posts I was looking at were super old until I actually joined. Nice to have some info that isn't 10 years old. I'll look into those.

You can find Ricky here for sure. I don't know what Miller's handle is here, but on fb messenger he's under miller import parts

Update:

So far, I've got the engine and trans out, I've swapped the front end harness and fusebox for one out of a gst, same with the engine harness. I've got the entire interior out of the car, for grins mostly, but also because I'm swapping the under dash harness out for a harness with the power mirror option, since the original did not have that option in it.

I've also got my Megan Racing downpipe mounted, along with a HKS Carbon Ti Catback exhaust, since the Megan Racing one I ordered had been canceled and refunded.

Also, since I'm going to daily this car, I will be cutting into the downpipe and installing a cat. I'm not overly worried about super high performance at the moment... yet 😁

Old posts? Apparently you haven't seen my build thread... ROFL

It's a fun swap, wiring was the hardest part on my end and even that was fairly straightforward. I know a lot of people have already mentioned Ricky, so I won't tag him too.. but he's a great asset to the community.. Especially if you need some remote tuning knocked out once the swap is complete.

One side note, if you're swapping harnesses make sure you add the power wire for the convertible top into the body harness coming from the fuse box. I missed that and had to run a fresh wire outside of the harness after the fact.

My dude, I read your post sometime back. You're one of the reasons I went this route. I had a grand ol' time swapping the harnesses over. I'm also planning on talking with Ricky about getting a tune for sure. I love your thread btw. I've been keeping tabs on it since around the time you started your swap.

Oof. Thanks for the heads up. I figured that was part of the under dash harness LOL.

Update:

I've installed my 255 lph pump. Unfortunately, ran into an issue with the stock pump hanger, making it impossible to install the pump. I've swapped it out temporarily as the hanger I bought doesn't have a evap sensor port. (Overly excited oops on my part... one click buy be like that sometimes...)

I've also installed the Fuel labs tank to rail kit, with that fancy fuel lab Fuel filter,(it was on sale, couldn't resist. 😅 ) which I managed to fit into the stock location. and a fuel labs AFPR.

I also have the wiring for my boost gauge, oil pressure Gauge, and wideband O2 gauge run, I just haven't tapped them into power yet.

That's all I've got for now, it's slow going, but I am definitely not trying to rush this. As of now, I'm probably over $5k-$6k into this, not including what I paid for the car. 😅😅😅

Now all that's left is some serious buttoning up, a few more parts coming in, and figuring out why these new cv axles are more wobbly than a party girl at three A.M.

Alright, everything is finally plumbed, hooked up, plugged in, and tightened up. I've got coolant filled, and oil in the engine (Valvoline VR1) just waiting on my Redline MT-90 from extremepsi to get here. Now I've run into good ol crank, no start. ECMlink showed no fuel flow, and from what I could hear/feel from the fuel pump hanger, the fuel pump isn't kicking on. I love troubleshooting! Woo!

Good progress so far.

Not sure if the GST dash harness accounted for this, or not, but the GS cars have a second fuel pump relay, next to the radio, driver’s side.

If there are still any connections to it, it may be the reason for the pump not running. Here’s the link to the article to bypass it, if you need to:

Also, the ecu provides the fuel pump ground on the GST and GSX models. You can check to see if you are getting grounding on that pin.

Otherwise, it may be a link setting problem.

Best of luck. Stay patient chasing down the details since they ultimately matter a great deal going forward.

Yeah, that's one of the things I noticed. No harness plug for that module on my harness that I can see. Slightly annoying, but I'm not afraid of working around it. Thanks for the link, I'll see what I can do.
