I'm going to be buying a 1997 gst within the next week hopefully. It has an evo swap, which I'd assume is from an evo 8. There's still a few things that need to be bolted up before the car is ready to start. Assuming he kept the 2g ecu, will I be able to start the car and drive, or will I need a tune?

Can you provide us more infos about the engine and what modifications/parts it has? (some pics/videos would be helpful)
You buy a project car that doesn't even start yet is "generally" not a good idea, if you are not sure how to make it run. (Of course it would depend on the price)
I don't know the whole story of the car, so it's hard to tell and it would depend on many factors, but if you are not familiar with this kind of thing, maybe you should look for another DSM.
Are you sure the engine is from an EVO 8? Not an early EVO 1/2/3?

This is the only pic I have of the engine bay. The car is only 2,000, which gives me a lot of wiggle room in terms of maintenance and upgrades. I'm not too worried on what I need to do to get it to run, I just wanted to know before I get the car so I won't have to wait longer if I need a tune. I'm not 100% sure which evo it's from but I'm guessing evo 8 because he said it's a lower mile motor. To my knowledge everything seems to be stock.

So the engine in the pic is the one coming on the car? If so, it's not an EVO 4-9 engine, it's probably form EVO 1-3. In that case it wouldn't be as complicated as if it was an EVO 8 engine, and wouldn't be a problem with DSM ECU. It's just like a general engine swap. There are slight differences between the early EVO engine and 2G DSM, like piston compression ratio if the engine is from EVO 3 and etc. But it wouldn't be a problem to start up the engine. And yeah $2000 is a very fair price.

Perfect! I'll be sure to ask him for more specifics when I'm ready to buy. Do you know how having an evo 1-3 motor would affect after market parts once I start buying them(intake, intake manifold, cams, etc.)?

You can use DSM's aftermarket parts on early EVO's engine. You can consider it as a 7 bolt engine. But it's kind of mixed with 1G 7 bolt and 2G 7 bolt engine.

That's a USDM Valve cover, at least. Also looks like a 2g manifold. Unless only the engine hand head were swapped and the rest retained, i doubt this is an evo engine. They usually turn up in America as fully dressed longblocks.

here is what an evo 3 engine looks like in an evo

Yes it is and I was aware of that. But it's just a valve cover unless OP cares if it has a Mitsubishi logo or not. We can't distinguish if the head and the block are from an early EVO by seeing the pic. and what the most important in this conversation was if the engine is an early 4g63 or late 4g63. I don't think it would really matter if the engine is from an EVO 1-3 or not since it's not that different from DSM's engine. It's just a 7 bolt block that comes with 1g style oil squirters, 1G 7 bolt oil pickup and a bit more agressive cams. And if the engine is from EVO 3, it could have the famous problematic pistons. Better not I guess.

So, it's an evo 1 motor with 41k on it. The guys is including all the parts from both motors and more. Would I be able to run the evo 1 turbo on stock tune or should I stick with the 2g turbo?

If you don't at least have a wideband AFR gauge and any method to tune the car, then go with the 2G stock turbo for now. You "can" run a 16g with the stock ECU, but you will definitely need to tune the car if you want to boost. So my suggestion is to keep the 16G from EVO until the day you have all the necessary supporting parts and some method to tune.

Yeah, that looks like an early 1G/2G DSM/Evo 1-3 4G63. Quite nice!

Keep in mind, the DSM/Evo 1-3 4G63s have transmissions on the left while Evo 4-9 have the transmissions on the right. And there are many variants of the 4G63s, the DSMs/Evo 1-3s have 6-bolts (iirc this is a early 1G DSM only) and 7 bolts. The Evo 4-8 are 7 bolts, but the Evo 9 has MIVEC.

I'm looking for an Evo block right now for my N/T, however that's when my car is done and I ship it out to the US. You found a really cool GS-T!

The other way around, always from inside the car, not outside.
