My last post here was from 2005 or 06. I ran into a guy today with a 99 GST auto 135k miles, asked him how much he wanted because I miss my old Eclipse. My last couple post on here was about injectors, tuning a giant turbo I had no business putting on yet and that I was moving to Alaska. 1 month before I was to move a tropical storm hit Houston, flooded my engine and threw a rod out the block. Insurance totaled me out and thats was that... car was the first car I really learned to build on and still has a spot in my heart.
So fast forward and I somehow remembered my Username and Password 15 years later and I'm posting this.

Has anything changed much in the dsm world since then? What are these things going for nowadays? I dont see any for sale within 300 miles of me on marketplace. Currently driving a 2020 STI under warranty so I need something to tinker with again.

What's yalls thoughts on this car? 99 gst auto 135k $2200, appears to be stock except for wheels. Looks to be decent shape but I dont know, I never see these anymore where I live now. Pic attached.

Talk me into it or talk me out of it please

Also, how are we looking on parts nowadays? We used to buy and sell tons of parts on here but a buddy told me they are getting hard to find.

Still have plenty of DSM Wisemen roaming the halls these days?

Yea, I haven't stopped thinking about my old Eclipse since that happened.

Yep, he daily drives it and its an older gentleman. Comes with the wheels. I dont see these cars anywhere anymore!!

Love those wheels but they are a bit too wide for me. Jump on it so you won’t think about your old one :sneaky:. They are for sure getting hard to find. When I was looking between 2016 - 2017, they’d pop up every month or so. Now, I’m lucky to see one period. And yes, I still look every week or so LOL

I'd buy it that's cheap. This is considered "low" miles in our cars. Don't let him know that a bone stock one that is kept well easily sells for $4-$5k in that mileage range. 99's are more sought after nowadays as well.

Also I wasn't around back in the early oughts but I feel like we have more custom fabricators now. And with the 3D printing being cheap and readily available now we can print some new aftermarket goodies and some more durable OEM-spec plastics that are getting rare.

I also still see these cars appear in junkyards around me so I have been hoarding plastic bits and wiring harnesses off of them lately.

As you probably also know the early EVO's (III-IX) are commanding unreasonable prices and have high demand so our engine bays still have readily available and cheap parts thankfully because of the EVO craze.

Also the new STI is finally doing away with the ancient EJ25 and rumors are that it will be getting the Ascent FA24 with better internals and a bigger turbo in case you want to look at trading in, in August :p

hold up are those Enkei RPF's? or knock offs. those are easily worth half the price of the car if so. Also maybe under closer inspection this car is only worth $2K.

Front bumper has paint rub so it will have to go. appears to be missing the passenger handle. missing all 4 center caps. I didn't see that it was an Alaska car so definitely check wheel wells, spare wheel well, and strut towers for rust. I'd still buy it though as long as it doesn't have life threatening rust issues

Yep. Those look like legit rpf1’s. That’s why it’s a steal for that price. But yeah good idea to check those spots especially the towers.

I wonder if I knew you back then.

Same username as now?

Yea I thought the mileage was pretty decent. My 97 back in 2005 had like +110k miles I believe and just got done slapping a 60 series turbo on there, with a closet full of parts I was getting ready to put on.

Yea new STI engine won't sound like the EJ25 but rumor has it that it will be stock 400hp so I'll probably trade this in eventually. Its just a daily driver with only cosmetic body stuff done. Mine does have the RA pistons though, they started that in 2019 after the type RA of 2018.
There also is a Eclipse non-running with EVO engine and tranny for sale near me for 4.5k... so I figured that was the big thing now here. Back in our day it was strokers 4g63s with mustang throttle bodies

Is there a reason 99 is sought after?

I think they may be some wide ass JNC wheels. Im not 100% but one of the center caps said JNC, rest were missing. Im kinda digging the wide wheels on it, nasty thick from behind. God I missed that booty

So the only thing I noticed was front bumper wasn't perfect and that door handle needs to be replaced, tint as well. No dings/dents. Clear coat looked good. I dont like that its an auto though but $2200 seems like a sweet deal

several "young guy" mods on a car owned by an older gentleman. Kinda curious. 2200 is cheap.

He dresses young, gold chain, flat bill hat, Gucci glasses, sneakers, hoodie but he's prob early 50s LOL. Im going to have to go back by his work and pop the hood, I didnt have time today. I want to make sure its all stock and take it for a drive.

Oh and there's def something going on with the ignition switch, you have to wiggle the key multiple times to get the starter to activate and turn over engine. Once you do that it starts right up. Assuming its the switch

99's I think are sought after just because it was last production year. The non turbo gs came with special edition oz rally rims which funny enough look very similar to RPF1's. I think they also had white gauge faces :idontknow:

Also I hope under the hood is not butchered either you never know with "those" people

Yea I'm going to check it out again soon and check the rats nest under the hood. If its all stock and no butchered wiring I'm prob going to get it and start on manual swap. I hate that its auto

I say go for it as long as everything under the hood is ok and there isn't any extreme rust anywhere, especially if it will be a side project car. Depending on what your goals are, the auto transmission is considered stronger than our manual transmissions.

Split crank is definitely preferable and the 99's had that special edition silver face plates and it was the 10 year anniversary. Had a 99 Barcelona red pearl one when I joined tuners in '06. Auto fwd sucks but awd auto i have much more respect for nowadays with mine. Swaps aren't that expensive anymore either:thumb: I vote DO IT LOL

Personally I'd get it especially if its running pretty good. I bought mine a couple years ago for more and i had to rebuild the short block cuz it had some crank walk :barf:. If not that one hope you find a good one, welcome back.

What am I looking for under the hood with the wiring? I don't remember the wiring being so bad on these compared to a 300zx TT.

Yall talking about wiring or vacuum lines? I've never seen a butchered eclipse but they also weren't this old when I had mine.
