Hello everyone,

Recently working on rebuilding the fuel system on my 90 gsx, and need some help.

I recently picked up a 90-94 AWD fuel tank, but it is missing the drain plug. Based on the 1g AWD fuel tank diagram I've come across on this site, the number for the drain plug is 05298. After looking at several other Mitsubishi fuel tank diagrams including the Evos, they also have this same number 05298 (Mitsubishi part#1715A135).

I am trying to confirm if this drain plug is the same drain plug for the 90-94 AWD dsm fuel tank?

If so then I can still order this basically universal fuel drain plug from the dealer, I think even STMtuned even sells them but have them listed for evo application.

No, It won't fit. Don't purchase the #1715A135 (M8). #05298 is not a part number, just a reference number for fuel drain plug. They are not the same.
You need to find the part number #MB075290 (M16 size) for 1g drain plug.
You can order it with any shop who carry Mitsubishi parts, if it is still available. Or just get one from junk yard and change the gasket, or get an universal one.

M16 x 1.50, the under head length is 10mm.

Thank you SO much for this information. I called a random Mitsu dealer in my area who told me there are actually still a few of these drain plugs(MB075290) floating around in California, so I put one on order to get here within the week.

I also appreciate the info on the size for the plug itself. I think I'll overnight a random oil drain plug in the same size, to allow me to fill the tank for now for mock up/test purposes until the oem plug comes in.

Sorry for the late comment but did you ever get a drain plug and if so did it fit properly, with no leaks or difficulty installing it, and what kind of gasket did you use? I need to drain my tank to clean and derust it and want to make sure I get the right kind.

MB075290 comes with a washer. If you want only the washer, the part number is MK601722 or MT199415, the one in the pic below. A M16 aluminum or copper crush washer might work as well.

That looks like some sort of fibrous material, not metal. Is it? I have an extra M16 gasket that's for the fill plug on a trans, t-case or rear diff. I think I tried various online Mitsubishi dealers and couldn't find these parts, so I'm hoping that their metal equivalents would work.

I'm guessing that a non-metallic material would be better at sealing in the fuel, which is a lot thinner and more volatile than oil, which is why they use this material.

Yes, the OEM is some sort of fiber paper, not metal. As I mentioned above that the drain plug kit comes with the gasket. I think the gasket is still available in Japan but considering about its shipping cost from Japan, to get a drain plug kit in the States would be cheaper. You can order it through any shops/stores that carry Mitsubishi OEM parts. I understand that you are concerned about material and I agree, but I believe an aluminum crush washer would do the job in case if you would have a hard time to find the OEM part.

I'll try to exhaust all domestic options before I go with the aluminum gasket. I'm not planning on dropping the tank till spring anyway as it's too cold here now, but I want to be ready for then. I wonder if I can cut a gasket to size of comparable material and put an aluminum gasket on top of it. If so, I'll have to find out what kind of material it is.

...Ok, found a US Mitsubishi dealer that has both the kit and gasket, for $4.33 & $1.94:

I just ordered some small items from them and they delivered in a reasonable amount of time, considering the delays these days. I already have new fasteners for the tank itself.

I ordered a washer from Japan before the pandemic. It was the oem fiber type. Josh at JNZ has recommended a metal crush-type also. Mine has not leaked even a trace, so I recommend these. I did drop the tank and de-rust and then seal it with a kit from Eastwood. Lots of labor (very sore back from hugging that tank and sloshing all the stuff in it). You end up with a toxic brew of spent chemicals to dispose (phosphoric acid, acetone, muratic acid...). I took a lot of time, but it worked well. I’m trusting that the coating will last forever, but it’s only been six months since I did it. They’ve been selling the product for years, though, with good reviews.

Thanks, I'll look into their kit. Sounds like a blast. :sneaky:
